790FX-GD70 + Memory mhz confusion ???

Forum Motherboards & Memory : MSI-Microstar 790FX-GD70 + Memory mhz confusion ???

Word :    Username :

I am woking on building a AMD 965BE.v2 system with this board but i am a little confused on the memory.

With this board it says it supports DDR3 up to 1333 each slot, it also says it can go 1333+ OC, however this is marked with a * at the end.

http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=p [...] od_no=1740

My confusion is.
If i purchase DDR3 at 1600 or more, will the mobo only limit it to 1333 at first then i have to OC to required speed.
Also the main confusion is that will it allow me to have all 4 slots OC to 1600+ or like the old AM2+ DDR3 boards which only allowed 1 slot of each channel to be OC to 1333+
Besicly i want to know if i should get some 1600 or 1333.

I know that it should be high speed low latency but can i get some yay or nay on these memory sticks or if you have recommendation.

The only thing the board is going to do for you is supply the voltage. The memory controller is on the CPU, and what it will do is the luck of the draw.

You will be limited to two slots as far as I know, unless this new CPU is radically different.

I doubt you will get it to run at 1600, but you can get that if you want. Might come in handy in the future.

The OCZ Gold kit you listed should be CL8 not 7 as it says...

But either one really. All three choices are fine.

CPU will be AMD Phenom II X4 Processor 965BE 125w version, when i can get my hands on it.

Seems the CPU says: Support for unregistered DIMMs up to PC2 8500(DDR2-1066MHz) and PC3 10600 (DDR3-1333MHz) – AM3 only
Guess that means the choice has been made for me to go 1333 with low CAS.

You might not be able to achieve 1600Mhz but you will be able to overclock the RAM a bit by raising your FSB. Remeber, lower timings are more important than MHZ, so try and get sticks that have the lowest timing possible and you should be fine.

I have the Mb with the original 965BE and 8 gigs of Gsklil DDR3 1600 running natively at 1333. You can set it in the BIOS to 1600 but it runs a 2T in timings instead of 1. This is an excellent MB with lots of options. If you want to run staedy at 1600 with 1T timings it might be tough. I saw no need as my system is incredibly fast to begin with. BTW it runs 8 gigs at 1333 by default at 1T

I have now sellected OCZ Platinum Low Voltage 4 x 2 GB DDR3-1333 PC3-10666 PC Memory Modules (OCZ3P1333LV4GK) due to its low latancy of 7-7-7-7-20 and ofc low voltage due to mobo recommending 1.5v.

Good plan ;)

I have the same set-up but ram is Corsair DDR3 1600. I want to run 8 gigs myself. Could you please explain what, I need to do to run at 1333MHZ? For example the voltage Etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've heard of people putting only one ramm module for start up. What did you do?

I have the same motherboard, bought 1600mhz RAM and I have no issues. It will boot up at default 1333 speed however while in BIOS under the Memory-Z you can change the memory ratio to 1:4 which will enable your memory to run at 1600 without the long task of changing a million settings, plus if you leave all else to auto the BIOS supplied w/ your board will automatically set the timings to the fastest possible, mine dual kit is currently running at cas lat 8 @ 1600mhz.

However, stay away from enabling the AOD (AMD Over Drive) utility, for some reason mine causes my display driver to not function properly.

Oh, BTW, changing to 1:4 ratio will allow you to run at 1T.

Hope this helps.

I am currently on a 965 be running four 1gb sticks at 1700mhz easy (1T) on a 790fx-gd70 with the voltage at 1.9v. This ram some say will pull 1800mhz.
