Overclocking a 990X rig

Forum Overclocking : General Discussion Overclocking a 990X rig

Hey, I'm wondering about overclocking my rig safely without significantly decresing it's lifespan. Preferabley what programs to use and what settings to use, too. My rig is all at stock settings;

i7 990x with a Thermalright MUX-120 Black cooler
Rampage III Extreme mobo
2x Palit GTX 480's
12gb (3x4GB) vengeance RAM with Corsair RAM cooler
3x1TB Western Digital Caviar Black HDD's
1200w Coolermaster Modular PSU
Tempest Phantom Enthusiast tower

Just curious to find any safe levels of overclocking so I can get that little bit more out of my system.

Thanks! :D

What app in the universe will need an OVERCLOCKED 990x????

Probably nothing, but I like to fiddle around with hardware a lot :) Was just looking for a rough guide as to what not to go past ^_^

architectural visualisation programs like 3dsmax take advantage of overclocked processors. the higher u oc, the less downtime u experience. a rendered scene taking 30 minutes at 3.6ghz takes 25 mins at 4.0 ghz. rendering 24 frames per second for a 20 second animation.....ure saving 40 minutes...

Max allowable Vcore according to Intel is 1.4V. TDP is 68.1 degrees. I am running with a bclk of 133x33 with a vcore of 1.356V. That is 4.4GHz at 63 degrees running prime95 and withing Intels recommended specs. With a bit more Vcore(1.45), I can run at 4.67GHz prime95 stable at 74 degrees. I am not willing to run the Vcore any higher or the temps but I have read you can hit 5GHz and be prime95 stable but you need 1.5V or more depending on the chip and you need good water cooling. I am happy with 4.4Ghz 24/7. As long as you do not exceed the max allowable voltage and temps you should not significanlty reduce the life span of the processor. The number one killer of anything electronic is heat so I am happy running 5 degrees lower than Intels load spec of 68.1.
