I have repeatedly tried to upgrade my out-of-the-box inspiron 531s with a new graphics card, an MSI NX Geforce 8500 GT 256 mb PCI express x16 graphics card from newegg:

Unfortunately, the computer is slimline, so it didn't work.
What I need is a low profile PCI express x16 graphics card that also requires a low (like 250-300W) PSU. I know this severely limits the graphical power of any card I get, but I don't want to go over $100 anyway.
I'm ultranew at this and am worried if I buy another card without consultation I'll screw up badly again. Is anyone willing to help?
I was thinking a JATON Video-PX8400GS_LX GeForce 8400 GS 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 card:

You may be able to find a low pro bracket for that 8500GT.

It's for playing some games, but I'm not an avid gamer or anything and I understand that with my computer I'm not going to be running crysis maxed out (or even on medium settings)
The 4670 looks nice, but I can't really find any 4670 card that would fit in my computer.
As for the 9500Gt, it seems like it would require a better PSU to run than mine.

while it does say that a 350w is "recommended" it isn't a requirement, your stock 300w has plenty of power for it. It uses only 28 watts of power, your PSU is quite capable of it.

Ok so I got it, but I don't know how to swap out the standard bracket with a low profile one. The screws or whatever's holding it on are too small. What should I do?

You should have gotten the replacement bracket and instructions, you might try to take the hexagonal nuts off the face of the plate to make the replacement. You might also check the manufacturers website for more information. It's tough to say without the parts in front of me, the pics just don't have much info.

It works, and it works beautifully. It can run both Mass Effect and Unreal Tournament 3 without a blip.
