I have a 2Wire dsl modem/router and all computers in my house are
wireless. I have a lifedrive that so far cannot seem to resolve urls
except in ip address form. This is fine for mail but not for web
browsing. It correctly detects the access point and is assigned an IP
by the ap. The router also correctly sees the lifedrive. Why would I
not be able to type the url as eg www.google.com but I can type it as
64.233.179.99? This is not much use when I want to select a link. :-P

Can anyone help?

Sounds like a DNS (domain name server) problem.

In the WiFi preferences, select your home network. Then tap "Edit...",
then "Details..." and then "Advanced...". There are two section in this
dialog: "IP address" and "DNS servers". For better performances, both
should be set to "Manual". Then you must fill the gaps.

For the IP address, use one which is not already used by another of your
PCs, and which complies to the Subnet mask. Typical home IP addresses
are 192.168.0.[2-255]

For the subnet mask, since you are a home user, you probably use
255.255.255.0 This means that you can place maximum 253 clients on your
network, plus one router.

The router's address is probaby 192.168.0.1

For DNS servers, you need to find these addresses in your ISP's
documentation. These IP addresses are also visible in your router
configuration dialog (for most routers, type 192.168.0.1 in your
webbrowsers, enter username and password, and then you should see the
configuration panel in your browser). You probably need to look around a
bit to find these two IP addresses. In doubt, ask your ISP.

I hope that helps.

Laurent

For my T\C I use "automatic" for both IP Address and DNS
Server. That works just fine with my Linksys router. Why
shouldn't the automatic settings work with the LifeDrive?

Well, for a starter, automatic is slower than manual, as the WiFi client
has to look for everything alone instead of simply readint the settings.

Besides, it depends on the configuration of the router too, and I find
that manua is more reliable than automatic. At least, you're sure which
settings are used ;-)

Laurent,

I found that I needed to manually type in the DNS. Apparently since my
router provides a firewall, I cannot resolve names using the router's
IP. I entered the actual DNS numbers for my ISP and voilla!

Thanks very much for the help.

Best,
-Al

Well, I don't know about your modem/router but mine has a dns server in
it as well as a dhcp one. It might help if you add the local IP of
your modem/router as the dns server in the lifedrive.
