I recently bought COD world at War and noticed my 7900 GS is no longer getting the job done like it did for cod4 for some reason. Basically the same game engine. Regardless being the college student I need a quick budget upgrade. I'm tossing between the EVGA 9600 GT and EVGA 9800 GTX. The 9600 GT has core clock of 740 mem 1950 and stream processors 64 The 9800GTX core is 740 mem 2200 and stream p at 128? the differnece in cards is $62 but is it really worth it? Any help would be appreciated.

See this chart, showing actual fps, at different resolutions. Keep in mind those are average fps, min fps will dip below that. With that in mind, it usually takes 45-50 avg fps to get 35+ for min fps.

yes its definitely worth it, the 9600GT is tons slower than the 9800GTX

Honestly i think the 4850 would be the best way to go since it cost more then the 9600gt but less then the 9800gtx. Its performance level is better then both cards.

^+1 certainly like invisik said...4850 is very gud...and u can find many 4850s in newegg for grt deals...find the one which has a gud warranty and get it...i have seen 4850s for abt 150 to 160 bucks...

Yeah +1 for the HD 4850. I just received mine a few days ago and I'm absolutely in love with it. Granted I have a 680i, so no Crossfire, but the excellent HDTV support and awesome AA performance makes it totally worth it.

Mine was $139 AR, with a aftermarket cooler, OC'd to 685/2100 by default. I pushed it to 750/2150 stable.

my mobo is set for nvidia drivers I don't think i can switch vid cards now without changing mobos?

It doesn't matter what video card or motherboard you have currently, you can mix and match brands all you want. You just need to uninstall your current drivers and clean any remnants of them before installing ATI drivers.

The only caveat to using both brands together is when you have an nforce chipset with an ATI card, or ATI chipset with an nvidia card. If you do that, It just means you won't be able to use a dual GPU setup, but a single card will work perfectly fine.

+1 for the 4850 or the 9800GTX+

They are both great cards with the 4850 being a little faster more times than not.
The 4850 should cost you a little less and would be my preference.
As long as your motherboard has a PCIe 16x slot, ANY PCIe card, including both of these GPU's, will work in it.
Also, be sure and check that your PSU has enough +12v amperage to handle your system with a new GPU.

Thanx for the input I just went with the 4850 as per your recommendations... Now I am just running the solo card so I'm assuming the switch should be relatively easy. If I take out the card and start up the pc. it should revert to on board video correct? From that point delete what is left of the nvida drivers if anything. Then turn off and install the ati card. Should boot up like normal recognize the video device and install the new 8.11 drivers I downloaded?

Most go into sleep mode which presumably saves power and the printer starts more quickly than if it runs through the test routines usual when first powering up. I always turn my printer off after use -- but then I don't do much printing.
