Hi everyone, been a fan of this site for a long time but new to the boards.

I currently have an AMD 4200+ 2.2GHz, X1950 Pro GPU, 2GB RAM, K9N Neo build and want to upgrade.

The above components are all I need to change. I will keep my current monitor, HDDs, etc.

Is it worth upgrading to

AMD Phenom II
MSI DKA790GX
4GB RAM
HD 4850

My budget was £500 but that will cost me £550 (price includes VAT, shipping). Im prepared to go the extra bit of money if it is worth it. What do you think?

Any other suggestions will be appreciated, but bare in mind my budget.

all of that would be great provided your power supply can handle it, what power supply do you have, brand and wattage?

that is a decent power supply, so that will be a nice upgrade for you, i say go for it, maybe get an aftermarket cooler for the CPU as well, in case you want to overclock in the future.

That's more or less what I'm planning to go for when I re-open my gaming centre, although I might get slightly cheaper motherboard and possibly a HD 4870 but it's still a very good choice.

If you are going with the phenom 940 then you'll need a cooler for it. Maybe just get the 920 and a less expensive mobo and put the saved money towards a hd4870. Also that ram seems awfully expensive, you should be able to get it a lot cheaper. Can you get mail in rebates in the UK?

For 1066 CAS 5-5-5-12 that price seems about right although you could save a tenner if you go for a CAS 7-7-7-20 rating but a tenner one way or the other shouldn't make much difference on a £500 budget.

if you go for a MSI K9A2 CF for instance which is basically the same as the one you mentioned but without onboard graphics but at halk the price you'd save enough for a 4870.

Or get a £75ish motherboard and save the rest by getting a 920.

I'd look into either a Gigabyte, or ASUS motherboard instead. Or for about the same price:

I can get that DFI board for cheaper here. It is £92 in a clearance sale. Do you think that would be better?

Is it worth going for the 1GB 4870 or just stick to 512MB? If I get the 1GB I'd have to get the slower CPU.

Another question. The side fan on my case is goosed, and the manuals say it is a 90mm fan. All I can find are 92mm fans. Will they fit. I know its only 2mm but I dont want to break anything.

1. The DFI board would be the better buy, especially if overclocking. MSI has serious issues with: Support, BIOS, Warranty, ect.
2. a 92mm fan should work just fine (it's a standard size: 40mm, 60mm, 80mm, 92mm, and 120mm are most common.)


*EDIT* save a little later, and get another 4850 to X-Fire.
