Avoid DDR3 (Rampage Extreme) as there is no gain from it. The DDR2 flavors are good.

Yep I'd also avoid DDR3 until your next build when it makes sense price/performance-wise.

Check out some other $2000-$2500 builds to get ideas on parts and PSU requirements, etc. X48 is probably the motherboard you'll be using for maximum Crossfire performance. CPU, you probably want a Q9450 or Q9550 and a good heastink like Vendetta 2 or Sunbeam Core Contact to overclock. 4Gb DDR2-800 or 1066 depending how high you want to OC. 640gb Western Digital hard drive. 24" LCD. Hmm sorry should have made that a list for you, but you get the idea :)

much appreciated, still not quite sure why DDR3 is a waste. It is its price that makes it bad or it just aint any good?

DDR3 is considered a waste because the performance gain is negligible for how much more it costs than DDR2.

However if you are considering upgrading your computer to the new Nehalem chipset then it may be worth it to get it now so you do not have to later. Then again, DDR3 prices will probably drop once Nehalem is mainstream.

And considering how much the Nehalem processors and chipsets will cost when they launch in the next couple months, you're going to be looking at hugely inflated prices over what you can build right now with X48, DDR2, 45nm CPU, and gfx cards.

I'd say build now with the above stuff and let Nehalem mature and go through the 'growing pains' (bugs, prices, availability) and then for your next build go with it as it'll be stable and cost-effective.
