Hello, I'm currently building a new computer and my brain is about to collapse due to all these numbers and factors.
It's been close to 5 years since I last upgraded/purchased my PC, so my Amiga really needs to get thrown out and get replaced.

On the lookout for the holy grail I've met several hinders such as whether to choose ATI or Nvidia videocard.
Whether to wait for the new 8x core processors and so on. But I've come to the conclusion that it seems like a fairly good time to upgrade, since as some people have written in other replies on the forum, you really don't want to become a bug tester for Intel. Especially not,if you have as bad knowledge as me when it comes to computer hardware and such.

Anyways, I've set up a system on a Norwegian site that is a lot more expensive then this newegg.com site *drool*. Theres not many other vendors to choose from that comes from the same country as I, and if I choose to buy from several I'll just loose the few bucks I save on shipment cost anyway.

I would truly appreciate any kind of help,whether its just a confirmation of a good build or your view on the hardware I should take instead.

Which sums it up to like $16~~.

I plan to spend around 13000 NOK about $2300.
Basicly that is what this PC would cost with the Norwegian vendors + shipment, vista 64bit and their help to build the pc (doesn't cost much).
I guess the reason its much cheaper in the US is due to the low $ value atm, before it was like 8-9 NOK,now its down to 5:|

I also got a couple of questions regarding hardware.
1. I've seen the 4780 cards with 1024 MB instead of 512 MB, but at the same price ? and I'm not talking about the once named "TOP" and "OC" etc, I know those are over clocked by the producers and such, but as a example :

For me that doesn't make sense, I thought they didn't even use OpenGL anymore? so whats the point in having 2.1 compared with 2.0 ?
And you lose 512 MB ram on the video card buy choosing to get OpenGL 2.1 instead of 2.0.

2. Would it be worth going for DDR3 or not now? It just seems so damn overpriced and not much of a boost performance wise.

Anyways, I would like to thank everyone for their response and effort in advance.
Also take into account that I don't have the ability to choose from f.eg 5000 different types of ram like I could on newegg ;P

The PSU is from a Norwegian case mod site that have gotten allot of good reviews.

But I'm not a 100% whether I should buy that or not.

Anyways, looking forward to some hardware suggestions and/or feedback on the rig I've set up.

My main use is Gaming, I've heard the duo core is a better choice. But I'm looking for a PC that will last awhile and I'm guessing they'll come up with support for quad as well for gaming.

The 1GB 4870 is new and not yet reviewed I think.

There was something about OpenGL and Vista just recently, and I didn't pay enough attention. I'll see if i can find that again for you.

Get the Rampage only if you plan to buy another 4870 in the future.

You can spend less and get more with a P45 board, for just a single card.


There are so many sites out there that do not review PSUs properly. I am not familiar with MIST. I recommend you consult:

For real PSU reviews, and find something well tested. You do not need a 1000W for one 4870.

DDR3 is not a good buy now. If you were planning to use it on an x58 board next year, possibly... but then you would not be spending so much.

It's really hard to find decent PSU's etc because I'm not able to choose from so many like u spoiled bastards who can use newegg ;P

As for the mothercard,ye i'm aware its really expensive. But the reason I choose it was that I've only seen good reviews on it,and I have barely any knowledge when it comes to motherboards so i'd rather spend a bit extra then sitting there with a useless one who's bugged and whatnot.

It would appear that OpenGL is far from dead, and even making a comeback. I think what I recalled reading was that a major upcoming game offered OpenGL support, though I do not recall which.

By the way, your thread title makes it seem as if you are looking for other Norwegians, only, to reply to your post. It's the way the words "fellow Norwegian" is grouped in the title. In English we use "fellow" that way. Like if someone lived in my state, I would say "He is a fellow Washingtonian."

It was just meant as a statment of me not being able to get ahold of the amount of hardware the US guys are able to get ahold of. And that i'm a fellow nerd who needs some advice from the hardware veterans ;P
