I want to try out building my own computer and its my first time. I just want to build one for around $500 and I've found everything I need. I just need to know if it will all work together and is there anything I can change with what I have to make the system better for the same price. If i can spend alot less than 500 that would be great. I just want to see if I can do it without messing up before I spend more to build my own gaming computer. So heres what I have found:

I havent picked out at OS. but I have an extra copy of XP that I was just going to load on there. I am pretty much a complete noob at this so be gentle. I have wanted to build my own pc for a while but havent had the money and worked my butt off this summer so I could pay for school and have a little extra to try building my own system. Thanks for the help.

Scrap the case & psu. Get one of these for better quality at a lower price:

Seriously, you could do better with $500 for a gaming rig.

Antec Sonata $100
E1200 $45 o/c'ed to 3Ghz-ish
GA-P35-DS3L $80
2X2GB DDR2-800 $50
HD 3870 $120+
DVD BURNER $25
160GB SATA $45

TOTAL $470 before tax & shipping

+1 for the Sonata III and HD 3870

If you make these two changes and nothing else I think your total will be $501 or something like that, minus some mail rebates.

I'd stick with the AMD processor. The E1200 is cheaper, but to make it competitive you'd need to spend extra on a cooler and you'd need a case with better cooling than the Sonata, and maybe better RAM.

Edit: if you can afford the extra $40 or so for a HD 4850, do it. It's totally worth it.
