Hey everyone,

Okay, I know that If i got to EVGA's website looking for information on how hot can my card get, i usually get a generic answer like:

Video card temperatures typically range from 40C to 80C. Most high end video cards such as the 78xx, 79xx, 88xx series typically display temperatures 50-70C idle and up to 80C-90C at load. The heatsink and fan assemblies attached to the video cards are specifically designed to reduce temperatures as much as possible.

I know that their warning means only when in use "as is" or "as purchased," not OC. Now that I am getting ready to OC my card, am i to assume that the temperature limits still stand.. I mean i cannot under any circumstance go over 90C or it will fry? The reason i haven't OC my graphics card yet is because it idles at 70C and goes up to 86C while playing COD4 for example.. even with the fan at 100% (not sure if that's normal)

I guess what i'm really asking is, is it safe to OC while i get those temps as is? if i do it, is there software that i can get that warns you if the temp is too hot? whatever suggestions you guys feel like offering i would really appreciate it.. Not on OC, just on temperature control

thanks..

Get an aftermarket cooler or improve the airflow in your case. Or both?

what I would do is OC it until you see arti facting. then benchmark the temp once you get your max non-artifacting oc. then report back.

another idea is to use nibitor to see what the manufacturer has actually listed in the video card BIOS as the critical temperature. This temp is about 10-15 degrees celcius lower than the actual thresh hold of the GPU. Thresh hold meaning max safe temperature do NOT exceed it or you climb the ladder to rapid burnout temperature which for the G92, is 12 degrees higher than thresh hold. the G80, or 8800GTX's GPU, is manufactured on the same process of 55nm, so I wouldn't worry about the indifferences of the two.

Also, the G92 runs stock 1.0V. Do some research to see what the 8800GTX's stock voltage is. If it's the same as the G92, which I'm guessing it is, then arguably the temps for G80 could resemble that of the G92 almost identically:

80-90 is average
115 threshhold
127 burnout

here's how to read your video card BIOS using nibitor: http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 731-3.html
