Nvidia's Big Bang II Comes this September [Updated]
One of the major topics of discussion for the last two weeks was Nvidia preparing a driver codenamed "Big Bang II" for introduction in September. In case you didnt know, Nvidia's first driver for SLI came with "Big Bang I", so naturally people assumed that this must be something similar & significant, in case you didnt believe the codename.

Release 180 is the official name for Big Bang II driver. Among other features like DisplayPort support, OpenGL 3.0, GPU transcoding, Multi-monitor support for SLI, Nvidia is also preparing for optimizations that will help Nvidia be more competitive to the Radeon 4800 series. As far as we are aware of the performance optimizations are mainly geared towards the GTX 200 series with the 9800 series getting a much needed boost as well.

Interesting...maybe they fixed Quad SLI for my 9800GX2? Nice to see multimoniter support is back in.

How's that for driver support? :D

Well if its related to SLi then its not even worth pondering over. Let alone waiting for.

Anything short of promised and guaranteed 100% scailing across a max of 4 cards is a waste of time.

Well, i guess everyone here should throw out their GFX cards then :P

So? Sounds to me like they are adding functionality that AMD already has. It will be nice to see how much extra speed they can get from the cards. Before I'd jump on it however, I'd like to know HOW they got the extra speed. Optimizing is one thing, cutting corners in IQ is something else.

That's how I read it as well. The thing is that AMD/ATI has had this functionality for quite a while too. You really have to wonder why Nvidia has taken so long to catch up. I wonder how long it will be before the first Nvidia fanboy shows up and uses twisted logic to say that Nvidia only didn't offer these features earlier because nobody wants them.

The only thing there that AMD has had for quite awhile is GPU transcode. I have AVIVO on my x1800XT, which is how old now? Depending on how they do it, Multi monitor support for multi card configs is still pretty new. Display port has been out for AMD since the 3xxx series? I didn't realize you couldn't get an Nvidia card with DP until now. As for OpenGL, I'm more interested in DX10.1 then GL 3.0.

I don't mean to rain on Nvidia's parade here. Job well done. I don't really see the point of calling it big bang II however, as its more like a whimper from where I am. Its still needed to get done however.

I'm not even sure how big of a deal displayport support is. I remember that AMD/ATI made a big deal about being the first to offer it, but from what I understand there is still some question as to whether it will ever become a widely accepted standard.

OpenGL doesn't mean much these days to the average consumer, but it is very important in the business world where most CAD and 3d applications still use it. Nvidia Quaddro cards were the top of the heap for workstation graphics for a long time but recently they haven't been able to hold a candle to ATI's FireGL cards.

May I ask how Nvidia believes this qualifies as "Big Bang 2?" because from my interpretation this is just a minuscule driver adding features that ATI have already implemented in their previous CrossfireX drivers, and hardware.
