Guys i need help building a budget gaming machine.

My first step is looking for good processor. I have read many a times that the Intel E8400 is a beast when it comes to pure gaming, but that processor is kinda way off my budget.

So i was wondering if there was any alternative to that processor (dual core) for gaming at 150 $. Any processor that i can overclock to ~ 3GHZ will do.

Also one more question - Does overclocking my CPU affect my games performance like stuttering etc.?

Thanks !

I overclock the e7200 3.4-3.6 on stock cooling all of the time. 3.8 with a aftermarket cooler. Its a real nice CPU.

OK so like almost all of you say that E7200 is a great performer and overclocker. Maybe you guys can clear out a few questions :

1. Will the increased clock speeds (3~3.5Ghz) harm my system in the form of crashes or freezes if i use it like 18 hours a day ?

2. Referred other websites and found that 45 nm CPUs degrade faster than 65 nm.

3. (Err what exactly does degrade mean ? )

If you OC is stable for 24 hours under Prime 95

OK one more question. How much of a difference does 3 MB L2 cache and 6 MB L2 cache make for gaming ?
If it's like 50% then E7200 :pfff:

Simply NO
Increase in L2 cash from 3 to 6 will give you increase in performance 50%

It doesnt make a big enough diffrence, the cache helps but you wont suffer a huge performance loss

lager cache=larger latency (usually)

really depends on the application, review the benchmarks for what you will use to see.
