Hi
I am considering this build primarily for number crunching. No gaming, no extreme OCing. Quietness is one of the goals. What do you think?

Q9450

2 x G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK

ASUS EN8600GTS SILENT/HTDP/256M GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

ASUS P5Q Deluxe LGA 775 Intel P45 Intel Motherboard

ENERMAX PRO82+ EPR385AWT 385W ATX12V Ver.2.3 Power Supply

ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink

Antec Solo Black/Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3750330AS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

some DVD burner - whichever will be on sale at NewEgg

One question I have is will 385W PSU be sufficient or I should get something more powerful?

$94.99 for a 385 PSU is bad.

I have one and it runs nice and quiet.

Not really. His setup, with the CPU at 3.2GHz and 90% load only requires 248 watts according to: http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

The PSU he picked is very highly efficient (82-88%; 80+ BRONZE certified), has a combined total of 30A on the 12V rails and is very quiet. He's paying a bit more now, but he'll save money on the power bill in the long run, AND he'll get a quieter PC (which was one of his goals).

See my previous post, but that would be a good alternative, especially because of the modular cabling.

You don't need the 520W model. 385 is definitely sufficient, though that price is rather steep. Check out the review of that line of PSUs on Anandtech.

You're right, he doesn't need a 500Watt power supply with the rig he listed.

...but if he spends just a little more and gets a stronger supply it might last him a while longer across future build unless he knows he's gonna want a shiny new PSU in the future. Or maybe he'll not upgrade this rig at all for 4 years and won't need any more than the 385, but it doesn't hurt to have more in the bank than you think you'll need, is a 500Watt that much more expensive in terms of noise and money?

It's not just about how fast the rig is...its about how good the rig sounds. Odonata

If he is running an 8600GTS, he definitely does not need a 520W PSU. The one he picked will run everything he chose just fine.

Thanks a lot to everybody! I noticed that NewEgg has the 425W version of the same PRO82+ series for $99.99. This one also has additional 6/8Pins connector. Again I am not sure I need this much wattage. The only other possible upgrade I can think of would be blu-ray burner when/if this format becomes ubiquitous and prices fall to reasonable level.
