I started off with a THERMALTAKE TOUGHPOWER 700W. It was quiet but I needed a near-silent one like my Coolermaster Extreme power 380W downstairs on another PC.

Got a Coolermaster 650W Xtreme Power - was no improvement
Got a Corsair 450W - was no improvement either
Got a Zalman 460W - no improvement either!!!


The Corsair was as quiet as the Thermaltake but not better. And, I was surprised at the Zalman's incapability.

I am currently stuck with the Corsair.

What PSU should I get that will make me happy?

Point blank - Enermax Liberty 500w or 620, these are as quiet as you can get (but you may have to grease the fan drum with tamiya high viscosity grease).

That might sound odd but I had to have quiet and antec neos - cooler master xyz - zalman crap all made more noise than anything so I went nuts on the enermax - perfect. I had to grease one s/h unit off ebay but these are the best you can get anyway and power almost anything unless you are stupid enough to pay nvidia twice for their power draining crap (one day they will learn that power consumption is an issue).

Anyway the only other option you have is to buy quiet fans and mod the psu yourself, which I have done with a coolermaster 750w as the original led fan was so annoying it wasnt funny.

Tagan are the only other company that know how to make quiet psu's and their U1 and U22 models are excellent again rock solid power and no rubbish. Avoid the U15 models though as they are a touch louder.

I know I sound like a pratt but having bought so much crap I have the advice you are looking for..... I hope at least !...

DAMMIT why do I live in the uk - consumerism doesnt work here.........grrr.....but that is the same psu as the tagan U1 series btw....

I use a Zalman ZM850-HP with a 140mm fan and heatpipes. It is really quiet! At least it is one of the quietest in any review! You could even mod it i guess to be even more silent!

It sounds like you want a fanless power supply. Newegg has one, but it doesn't sound like that would help.

So Tagan OEMs from Seasonic? I thought they were primarily Topower units. Do you have any links to back up this claim?

The Enermax ones seem to be pretty expensive.

I have bought a TAGAN 580W U22 one. Will update everyone when I have plugged it into my PC.

Okkkk... the Tagan has 2 Fans inside! And I can hear the air being pushed out.

Is it safe to disconnect one of the fans .. the one which stays on the inside?
