Hi,

Ok unfortunately I’ve got a Dell. A 710 XPS:
590 Sli mobo
1x 8800 GTX 768mb

I would like to make the above "1x" a "2x" but am unsure what card to get.
I know that Nvidia are a bit more lenient these days and allow any same model card to be paired up with any other same model card despite manufacturer. However my system is a dell and my mobo uses the infamous Dell XPS BIOS, this fact makes me worry about throwing any old 8800 GTX into my system and hoping it will SLi up with its neighbour.

So do I have to buy an 8800 GTX from Dell costing roughly $9000 or can I get one from ebay for roughly $200.

Thanks for any help.

You can get any 8800GTX to SLI with that card, it should give you a pretty good performance bump by all rights as long as you have a decent CPU.

You might need a higher 12v amperage power supply to run 2 of those cards though, just depends on what is in your system

I just checked out a review of that Dell system; it actually has some pretty nice components with the QX6700 and 750w-1000w PSU

Just double check your PSU amperage on the 12v rails and make sure you don't double up any of the graphics cards power connectors on the same rails if you can help it; but you should be good to go i'd think

The PSU is a Dell 750W. Specifications:

MODEL: H750P-00
DC OUTPUT:
+5V=/16A      , +3.3v=/30A
+12VA=/18A  , +12VB=/18A
+12VC=/18A  ,  +12VD=/16A
-12V=/0.2A    , +5Vfp=/3A

4 12v rails, 2 pci-e power connectors on seperate rails so should handle it ok, amps seem good but im no expert!?.

CPU: QX6700 OC@ 3.2GHz (Thats just on the multiplier, unfortunatly the Dell BIOS doesnt allow any voltage or FSB control)

thanks again for the help Ovaltineplease.

I got another quick question: will i be able to use any SLi bridge with this setup?

note that my case and mobo are both BTX form factor.

I was thinking of this: http://cgi.ebay.ie/Official-ASUS-N [...] dZViewItem

I'd imagine swarner, from the picture I saw it looks like it is more than possible - but I haven't had a hands on experience with it obviously.

Your PSU should be able to handle it, just make sure that you give whichever pcie connector that is on 12VD/12VC 18A/16A to the second video card if you can help it. I'd imagine that at the factory 12VA/12VB are hooked to the bundled gpu by default though.

Thanks, How do i know which connector is on which rail, or do i have to guess?

if its not color coded or otherwise indicated, you'd just have to guess or check the documentation for the psu as it may indicate it.

Sometimes the connectors are labelled

As I said though, its more than likely the stronger rail is hooked to the gpu at the factory anyways
