My advisers tell me that Gigabyte and Biostar can't be trusted because they've been screwed so many times by defective or below-par motherboards made by them. They say only trust MSI or ASUS. Is there general discrepancy in motherboard quality or are they supposed to be on par with each other?

I'm after a P35 from Newegg in the ~$80-90 price range.

Another question I have is how big is the audio difference between Realtek ALC883 and Realtek ALC 888? I do care about sound but not enough to buy a sound card. My 2.1 speakers are not surround sound.

LOL, I would say don't trust Biostar and MSI. Gigabyte and Asus are fine. The answer to this question will depend on what experiences with what companies the responder has had. I believe most of us around here would say that Gigabyte is ok to use.

The 888 is newer of course, but I'm not sure what the difference is. I seem to recall there was something special for the 888 making it different then the others that came before it. I'm not sure if this is true however, you should look it up.

In my experience and from everything that I have read which is quite a bit Asus seems to be the consensus best reliability in terms of a motherboard. Both ASUS mobos I have had have been rock solid lasting 4/5yrs with nothing wrong at all.

Still running my P4C800E Deluxe right now with my P4 prescott pwnage!!! LOL

Vivid - If you only want a single video card I would go with the P35/45 depending on your budget, if you want to go with crossfire then look at the x38/48 boards.

EVGA is the best maker on the market right now, followed by XFX. MSI is tentativily put third. or at the bottom, depending on who you are.

Asus and Gigabyte are the only boards I like for top end use. Actually, though, for low end stuff... the builds that have to turn on, run office apps and not die the next day, I have had good luck with foxconn.

If you know what your doing, DFI and Gigabyte can be overclocking monsters. If you don't know what your doing, Asus is probably a better bet. DFI and Gigabyte usually include lots of options, other companies less so.
