I need some help to just confirm that my MB and this new CPU are indeed compatible.

My MB is a Gigabyte GA-8VM800PMD-775 (Yeah, pretty old).
The new CPU I'm thinking of getting is a Pentium D 2.80GHz (that's all the detail I got).

The Compatibility List for my board from the Gigabyte site has the following entries:

Vendor Model FSB BIOS VERSION
Intel Pentium D 920(2.8GHz,4MB) 800 F2
Intel Pentium D 915(2.8GHz,4MB) 800 F4
Intel Pentium D 820(2.8GHz,2MB) 800 F1

Thus it shows all 2.8GHz Pentium D's to be supported.
But to be sure, I just want to drop it here, and ensure I'm not missing anything.

Are you buying that CPU brand new? If you are, DON'T. If you are getting it really, really (really) cheap then go for it. Just make sure you got BIOS version F4 or later.

It would also be a good idea to flash it before hand if you don't have Bios F4

Agreed. I hope its a 9xx chip you are getting. The 8xx ones are little ovens.

I looked hoping it supported something newer like the E2xxx series but it doesn't......

This appears to be the ceiling for it

If he is paying more than $40 for that CPU he should go for a GA-EP35-DS3L and E2160 combo. Although he may just be doing word processing or something, he hasn't said.

Why shouldn't I buy this CPU?

I am getting it really really cheap. But more than anything, I'm just looking for a CPU to use on my MB.

These are my options: (R = South African Rands = R8 to $1)
Intel Celeron D Processors:
2.53 GHz = R300-00
2.66 GHz = R345-00
2.80 GHz = R390-00
3.06 GHz = R420-00
3.20 GHz = R450-00

Intel Pentium and Pentium D
Pentium R 2.66GHz = R350
Pentium R 2.80GHz = R400
Pentium R 3.06GHz = R450
Pentium R 3.20GHz = R500
Pentium D 2.80GHz = R450
Pentium D 3.06GHz = R500
Pentium D 3.20GHz = R550

So those are my options, and I'm not sure all are compatible with my MB. But its all I can get my hands on, because mainstream suppliers don't keep such old CPU's anymore.

I'm quite familiar with the 2160/DS3L combo...... and i did a quick estimate and its 168.95 shipped

Ahh hes in South Africa.....that makes a difference.
And i converted it, its 69.98 in USD for this Pentium D 3.20GHz = R550

I just customized a CPU Chart with the 3.2Ghz Pentium D's plus the 2.8's and 3.0ghz ones as well and the E2140 and 2160(for reference)

As far as what you have listed these 3 would be the best choice performance wise.

Pentium D 2.80GHz = R450
Pentium D 3.06GHz = R500
Pentium D 3.20GHz = R550

And holy crap dude, I was browsing a few different etailers there is SA and the prices you list are better than what i was finding I saw one for over R1000. the 2160 is R 795.00 or 100 USD

The only reason I suggested not getting this CPU if you aren't getting it really cheap is because a current $US60 CPU would equal or beat them all at nearly 1/2 the clockspeed. But it would require a new motherboard too. cliffro has a nice chart there for you, but you should go through the different benchmarks in the dropdown to compare them all properly.

Randomizer, being from South Africa as well I can safely say that R500 for a Pentium D is a good price. Hell a lot of places won't even sell us poor 3rd wolders a Celeron for much less...

Fair enough then. But he should still look to see what he can get a new CPU/mobo combination for, it may still be worthwhile. But if the prices are as bad as you say then he has little choice.
