Hello all.

I had a problem with my screen flickering and the display going blank.

Somebody has trying to "resolve" this by turning off on/off swictch on the power supply of the base unit and it looks like I didn't get away with it.

The fuse for the ring main in the flat tripped. the power strip failed, the antec phantom power supply 500 blew.

I got hold of a new 355W ATX power supply to see if the ASUS P5K-E mobo boots. The fan on the E6600 whirls around for perhaps 2 seconds and stops. I get no beeps or display on screen. The small ray of light is there is a green LED lit on the mobo.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

First thoughts, repost and proof read.  I "think" you said the fuse for the psu unit burned out?  aka power surge?  Now your computer no longer works?

I am going to assume a surge damaged components in your computer.  If the power supply is no longer working, odds are it damaged numerous other things as well.  That is why ups are so useful, cheapo power strips don't do much, it simply archs over the trip if the surge is strong enough.

I would suggest getting some spare components,  replace the motherboard first.  If you get the same result, try a new cpu with the old motherboard.

I really don't understand exactly what you said happened in this post.  I guess someone tried to fix a flickering screen by turning a power strip off and it ruined a psu?  but yeah,  rewrite it no clue what you said exactly this is all up for trying to decode what you said.  Sorry.

Sorry could have been clearer.

The PC was running but the screen was not displaying. Someone switched off the power on the base unit whilst on and now it won't boot up. No beeps just a CPU fan turning for a few seconds before stopping.

Am trying to avoid throwing parts at it just yet but know I'll probably have to bite the bullet.

I have a Asus P5K-E motherboard and I can't get any info on minimum power supply required for it. I have a 355 W ATX power supply as a replacement for the phantom 500 W and I'm wondering if thats sufficient. I don't have much hanging off it, just a HDD and an additional case fan.

Am just wondering was down to lack of power supply from the 355W power supply.

At least there's an LED on the mobo.

I would question the 335w psu ability to push your system, my suggestion would go to a comp shop and see if they can fire it up with a psu they have laying around, bribe a friend with some beer to borrow his psu for a while, or buysomething more powerful, anyway you cut it, that psu is a little weak.

thanks blacksci , hope you are right.

I'll buy one tomorrow, there's only one sata power on the 355W power supply so i gotta bite the bullet on that one and get a 500W or 600W supply.

^Check you CPU power rail. There should be a 4 pin thing going next to the CPU...
I agree with blacksci the PSU is weak no matter what you do with it.

cheers for input smalltime0

last night I unhooked the additional case fan and the machine booted up
with the 355W temporary power supply. So mobo and cpu are dandy.

I'll have a look around for a decent power supply around 500 W .

Thanks again for you replies all.
