I just bought Iomega desktop hard drive and I am trying to download pictures from my hard drive to it and I keep getting that message ..... help

Look at the manual of your hard disk, and find out how to disable protection. Yes, even if the hard disk is just write-protected, you should be able to read data from your it, but your iOmega's protection feature could work both ways.
