IBM promises cooler chips with capillary-action and water jets

Published on October 27, 2006

IBM's Zurich labs have developed a new heatsink and water-cooling that promises to cool chips up to six times better than conventional air cooling. The heatsink contains tiny channels similar to the capillaries you would see in tree leaves and in human circulator systems. The channels allow either water or heatsink compound to spread more uniformly and thereby dissipate more heat. Read more

Okay. I need help. I need to buy a new heatsink, and this is the one I've chosen: http://www.alpchat.com/images/scythe-katana-2-1.jpg

It's socket 478, as is my motherboard. Problem is, I don't know if it will fit.

This is my computer: http://img257.imageshack.us/img257 [...] 957jf3.jpg

I want to replace the current heatsink with the Scythe Katana 2. The current heatsink is like 8 cm (length.) The new one is at least 10.5 cm in length. However, the scythe katana is mounted at a 90 degree angle, unlike most tower heatsinks.

Will the battery looking things on the motherboard get in the way?

It'll fit, don't worry. That's why the body is raised and connected with heatpipes, for ground clearance. And side mounted fans are the norm with aftermarket coolers. They perform better.

The battery looking things are capacitors and no it should be fine. You should be able to mount the Scythe with the fan facing either the back or top depending on clearance, toward the back being better if you have a back fan which I don't see. Your goal should be to face the fans air flow toward the nearest fan that can remove the air from the case.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll buy the fan and try to put it in. Besides the heatsink and my power supply fan, I have no other fans. No case fans. So, if it isn't too much to ask, where exactly should I make the Scythe face?

Here's a picture of my entire computer- http://img403.imageshack.us/img403 [...] 657sf1.jpg

I'm not going to buy any case fans yet, so should I just make it face the back (to the left in the picture) where the ventilation holes are?

Thanks.

Face the back, meaning the side with the fan facing the front so that it expells hot air to the back. And you should really get at least one case fan. They cost like $3-5 each.
