No it is not some April Fool jokes. VR-Zone has learned that there will be two high end parts from Nvidia to replace the current GeForce 9800 GX2 and 9800 GTX in Q3. These two parts are GeForce 9900 GTX and GeForce 9900 GT based on the new GT200 architecture. GeForce 9800 GX2 and GTX will have a short lifespan since they will be replaced in a couple of months time. Nvidia has positioned GeForce 9900 GTX to replace 9800 GX2 and this gave a clue that a single GT200 card will actually outperform a dual G92 card. Likewise for GeForce 9900 GT, outperforming and replacing 9800 GTX. CJ revealed to us that Nvidia will have a hard time fitting GT200 onto the PCB since the GPU is gonna be large and very power hungry so we can probably assume it is still 65nm based. The PCB for GT200 will be P651.

I agree. They need to work on their naming scheme a little bit. New architecture should result in a new number scheme like it used to be. For serious users it's not that bad, but i could see it starting to get a little confusing for some people.

Bloody hell are they shafting anyone that just bought a GX2!!
No bloody way am I swapping out my GTXs in the near future!
Who'd think (assuming the card comes out to tempt buyers from the HD4K series) that a top-end card would ever last a min. of 3 months!
I think my next card(s) will be ATi's... :)

...GT200 is really two G94 chips slapped together...

Dual-core makes sense on a few points; GT200 is not a proper code-name for an NVIDIA core, but would sooner indicate something like a dual-core spin. The name GeForce 9900 series also points to that GT200 is another spin off the G9x architecture, and not a true next generation architecture.

well, we'll know when it arrives :P

If I'm reading this correctly, GT200 is two G94s in a single package. Hopefully this chip won't require duplicate framebuffers.

Well ti would be soemthing very knew then as all SLI needs two framebuffers thats how it works. Cards dont pool recources they just work together.

By single package I mean Q6600 style, like two dies under the same IHS. That is something completely new for GPUs as far as I know.

The 9800gx2 is 50 to 60% faster than an 8800gtx in most demanding game ( Crysis, Oblivion etc ) so I would say a 9900gtx will be 70 to 80% than a 8800gtx, and should retail for $500

9800gt will be just under/ same performance as 9800gx2 and should retail for $300 or so....

9800gx2/ 8800gts sli owners will have no reason to upgrade imho...

Its highly unlikely that 9900gtx will be 2 g94 cards on one board...
