fun situation..
my friend bought a pc from XXXX(pc builder) 2 years ago, he doesnt know anything about computer, so he bought it for 1300$ and i found out that his specs are..
P4 3.0Ghz
1gb ram(512mb x2) pc3200
Radeon 9200
msi 7103 board
200GB HDD
DVD Rom + CD RW
never heard brand for PSU
20" LCD

i think he got ripped off. anyone know the right price for this pc? on 2006 mayish.

Your friend may have paid a little over the odds for his system. But I don't think it would have been by much. I think the most expencive part of his PC at the time would have been the 20" LCD. You can get those cheap these days. But in 2006 they would have been a lot of money. Other parts like memory and hard drives have also come down a lot. It just goes to show how fast things in the IT industry move.

In 2006 I paid £450 (about $900) for:
Athlon 64 3200+
Asus A8V Deluxe (with wireless card)
6600GT (AGP)
2GB DDR400
2x200GB hard drives

But, to be fair, as ducker19 said, LCDs were pretty expensive then. I think he paid over the odds though, especially as things are more expensive here in the UK.

Maybe a bit, but not too bad I would say. Stuff was more expensive and smaller back then.

j - right about then, the Core2Duo was about to be officially introduced. The Pentium D series had already been out for about a year, so a single-core Pentium 4 CPU should have cost $100-150.
The Radeon 9200 was a low-end board by that time, so figure maybe $40.
A 200GB hard drive should have been no more than $100.
Figure at most $50 for the optical drive.
Figure $100 for the RAM.
The MB is low-end, perhaps $75.
Figure $75 for case w/no-name PS.
Figure $400 for the 20" LCD.
Total hardware is $1000 or so; $300 for labor+profit sounds reasonable, especially if Windows was also included.
