Hello,

I am currently building a top of the line gaming pc, and I need an excellent CD-ROM, something FAST. Something that will play DVD’s, burn DVD’s Also burn/play regular CD-R & CD-RW discs, basically everything. If possible with the “lightscribe technology” Something with a good speed! Like I sad it’s a gaming pc so I’m looking for a good one. I don’t really care about the Blu-Ray, and price also doesn’t matter.

Links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The drive's speed will have NO impact on gaming performance, at most it might reduce the installation time. I would just get a PATA or SATA drive and don't worry about it. Note that you also need lightscribe discs for lightscribe to work.

i picked up a couple of sata burners, one samsung and one asus. they 'feel' like they have a better response time compared to my lite-on or sony dvd burners. getting out of pata will be your gain, beyond that just pick one with the best reviews off newegg.

It has no impact on speed of the game... Get a reliable one or the best your budget can afford... There's a lot of suggestion here.

SATA drive is preferred these days....

Get a SATA burner. I also reccomending getting a light scribe one. It will only cost you like $15 more, and it's nice to have when you're burning CDs and stuff. For games, a "fast" CD drive will not increase performance in any way (Though games might install faster, but even then, not by much at all...). Games are played off your hard drive, not the CD drive. Most CD drives are rated at 48x, which is plenty fast. You can also find a 52x drive, but it seems that those are usually just with readers, and there is no notable difference between the two.

I don't know if over time they fixed this, but a few years back the 52x had a noticeable acoustic difference ... the things would sound like electric weed-eaters :P.
