I have an old AOpen AK86-L motherboard with an Athlon 3200+ and I replaced the HSF with a Coolermaster today.
The problem is now when I go to boot up, the standby light comes on. The new CPU fan and GPU fan kick in, and it sounds like it's trying to boot up (there's no beeps and it doesn't turn itself off).
Any ideas? Have I inadvertently knackered something? Incidentally the motherboard battery (CR2032) ran out a while back. Do I need to replace it in order to clear the CMOS?
You probably havent seated the Heatsink correctly, did you use thermal paste at all? i know alot of those XP's didnt like even starting up if they didnt have good contact.

I think I've killed something. I reseated everything, and got a strong burning smell when I tried to turn it on again. It seemed to be coming from the motherboard near the processor. When I took the CPU out it didn't smell so I would assume it wasn't that?
