Hello,

I recently built a new computer. I am running the Asus P5k Premium w/ Q6600. I installed PC Probe II and it is reporting my CPU at a temp of 80C. Is this accurate?

I put my hand over the CPU Fan and it doesn't feel like 80C. I would appreciate your thoughts on the issue. I am running the stock Intel Fan which comes with the Q6600.

Thanks in advance,
D

What does BIOS show - Also try TAT, speedfan, and/or coretemp.

If Reading 80C (Ouch), but Heatsink not hot, then one of two things (1) It is not 80C, (2) your heat sink is not installed correctly and is NOT safe to run at this temp. There is a temp guide for intel Duals and quads under Overclocking I beleive - very good reading.

Might need a BIOS update, maybe some one with your MB can speakup as I have Gigabyte mord.

Editted - corrected Temp guide location

Download Core Temp and run it and post your idle temp ASAP.

My cores are the following:
79, 77, 71, 72

I dont think I've seated my CPU Fan/Heatsink properly. I find it hard to put in its pegs. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
D

Do not run that CPU again until you seat the HS properly. Take the mobo out of the case and use a spacer around the hole (roll of tape etc.) to get enough pressure without damaging the mobo. Really what you should do is get an aftermarket HS with a backplate.

^Agreed. The HSF is not seated properly. I feel your pain. Yeah, the pegs are really hard to work with. I recommend you invest some $ on a cooler with a back plate.

It's probably OK, as long as you didn't run it too long at those temps.

Hi Everyone,

I just installed a new fan/heatsink and the core is MUCH lower....
From 80C down to ~30C.

Was my stock fan defective or was it a poor installation job?

Cheers and thanks everyone,
D

The HS mounting isn't defective, it's just junk. You didn't install it correctly the first time.
