Chipset designers prepared for AMD's FSB standard change

Published on August 23, 2002

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has reportedly decided to change the FSB (front-side bus) standard of its upcoming Athlon XP 2700+ processor from the current 266MHz to 333MHz, contrary to its previous announcement that it would not alter the architecture of its K7-core Athlon XP products. Read more

Hey guys,

Im trying to overclock my Q6600, slowly.

I have disabled speedstep on my P35-DS3R motherboard ( the option in BIOS for this was C1E (hopefully!!)).

I have booted the system COUNTLESS times, and have checked with CPU-Z AND Core Temp.
Every single time, no matter what FSB I have set the CPU to (280, 290, 333, etc) I have not been able to get it to stay. The System IS dual booting like it should once I save the BIOS settings and exit.

It is important I tell that I have successfully UNDERclocked my PC :(
I have been able to change my multiplier from 6 to 9 to 8 to 7, they all stay stable in CPU-Z, which means the speedstepping IS off, but I just can't seem to make my PC want to leave the FSB of 266 mhz.

What is going on with my system?

what RAM are you using? have you done memtest 86+?

No i havent, and didnt think I needed to do anything with my RAM. I was only trying to change the cpu fsb.

My ram I BELIEVE is just a standard set of DDR2-800 (240 pin)

P35-DS3R motherboard.

Underclock your RAM so you know it's not holding you back..

how would it be holding me back?

Im telling you, i couldnt even get the motherboard to change 2 mhz.

Theres gotta be another issue at work here.

Someone told me on another board to do this:

P35 Chipset. This happened to me too.

Turn off PSU
Wait a minute
Take out CMOS Battery
Wait 30 mins - 60 mins or so
Put it back in
Boot, set time, etc
Go OC

Think that could be it?

No Clue if that Battery thing could help.
I have not heard that myself, but you never know....

I too would look at the memory setting.
When you adjust your FSB, you are also adjusting your Memory Speeds.

#1 - Make sure the RAM Timing is 1:1 to start.
#2 - Check to see the Recommended Voltage for your RAM and set it there.
Depending on the RAM it could be anywhere from 1.8 to 2.2

If its good in theory but not in practice,
its not good theory.

Have you done this?

1) disable CIA2
2) disable C1E
3) disable EIST
4) disable Virtualization Technology
5) disable CPUID
6) disable No-Execute Memory Protect
7) set PCI Express (PCI-e) frequency to 100 mhz

No answer but I have the same MB, same processor and the smallest increase in FSB won't work. Hope there is an answer.

I have disabled C1A, Virtual Technology, and Thermal Monitor. Not sure about the rest.

And for some reason when I change my FSB, it moves my memory from 800mhz to 1100mhz.

Is that my problem?

I dont know how to leave it on 800mhz.

I have DDR2-800

Make sure to turn off USB Legacy Storage, it creates alot of problems overclocking GB boards. I have a EP35-DS3L and an EP45-DS3L and if i do not turn off the legacy storage they will not overclock in anyway. Just have to remember to turn it back on to use Q-Flash to update BIOS. Also the vDrop on my boards seem to be high, need to go over the voltage I want to get it stable.

In the M.I.T. there should be a setting for RAM speed, if left on auto it will just double FSB number and try to run RAM at that speed, need to change it to get the speed closest to 800MHz.

I did this again:

Quote :

1) disable CIA2
2) disable C1E
3) disable EIST
4) disable Virtualization Technology
5) disable CPUID
6) disable No-Execute Memory Protect
7) set PCI Express (PCI-e) frequency to 100 mhz

I couldnt find the EIST, but I turned off no-execute memory protect, and set my PCI-E freq to 100mhz.

My CPU-Z says 8x mult @ 370 mhz right now. Which effectively overclocked my system from 2.4ghz to 2.96ghz.

HOLY ****!

Im gonna run prime95 now and let it test for a few hours. if its stable, OMFG! thank you!

What is a comfortable OC temperature on Prime95 for a FULL LOAD test?

My cores were at 45 degrees pre-OC. Now they are around 70 on a full load test. Ill drop my OC, but what is a comfortable temp?

60? 65? Remember, this is a FULL LOAD test.

More Information

Load temperature should not exceed 70ºC under Prime95.
You are doing just fine.
