Forum CPU & Components : Power Supplies, Cases & Mods GOING NUTS!!! still cannot find a case :(

After spending couple of weeks, I've finally decided for all the parts except the case.

The case should hold:

* abit P35 Pro
* Q6600
* ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro
* Silencer 750 or Corsair 620HX
* XFX 8600GT
* 4x2GB G.Skill memory
* 4x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB
* 2x Seagate Cheetah 15K.5 147GB
* Adaptec RAID 3805
* Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Fatality
* Samsung SH-S203N
* Sony Black 1.44M floppy drive

The main problem here is that I have 6 drives, 2 of them being 15K rpm. Thus, I think that I need good cooling. I'm cosidering P182, Cosmos 1000 and LIAN LI PC-V1200Bplus II. But according to some reviews, they all have big flaws: P182's lower chamber is too small; Cosmos 1000 has no cooling for hard drives; LIAN LI PC-V1200Bplus II is too loud.

Any comments, other suggestions for a good, quiet case?

Thank you

I love my Thermaltake Armor Plus
Some say its ugly, but I say its very functional.

As for the video card, I'd stay away from that 8600 unless its only like 100$$

just my 2 cents

:)

I won't play any games. XFX 8600GT is $75 after $30 rebate at newegg.

I can't say I liked Thermaltake Armor Plus' design much. But if it is quiet and has good interior cooling, why not...

I can't find any hang ups with the design. I admit, there are many MID tower cases with a better design, but for a full tower, I think the A+ is great. It's roomy with good airflow and nice and cool. I am curious what you don't like about the design. With all of those HD units I would definitely go with a full tower.
Good deal on the Vid btw :)

I had a Thermaltake Armor holding 9 drives at one point, it worked very well. The stock case has 3 3.5" bays internal up near the power supply, and then 9 5.25" bays in the front.

The stock case comes with one iCage, that converts 3 of the front 5.25" bays to 3 3.5" bays with a 120mm fan in front. The case can take up to 2 more iCages, giving you 9 3.5" bays in front, all behind 120mm fans.

When I had the unit fully populated with 9 drives (8 in front, 1 in the internal cage near the power supply), it was still remarkably quiet.

By the way, this is drive/bay configuration in the regular Armor case or Armor Extreme case, not the Armor Plus. The Armor Plus has a different internal configuration that is denser (more drives), but I don't think the cooling is as good.

I second that, being an owner of Armor myself.

I have 4 hard drives mounted at the front of the case (3 put in the provided cage) and 1 in the 3,5 inch cage that came with the case. I put in a second fan right above the stock one (mounted at the front of the case).

The other 3 drives are in the cage at the back of the case, right next to the power supply. There's a 80mm fan behind them, that does a pretty good job of pulling the hot air out, and keeping them in the 33-35 degree range.

I enjoyed this case. http://www.spirecoolers.com/main/p [...] ProdID=529
But not easy to find anymore. Armor is cute, but HUGE open holes, god help you if you have loud internal devices.

Why is the lower chamber too small on the p182? My psu fits there just fine and the drive cage in the lower chamber holds 3 drives and the middle cage holds 3.

I prefer simple designs. Feature-wise, yes, it's very good. But I jus't don't like the look of a case which is designed to look "cool" for gamers.

So you no longer have Thermaltake Armor. What do you have now?

Btw, believe it or not, I did not know about stuff like iCage. I had only heard of cheap brackets to convert 5.25" to 3.5". Thus, I was solely looking for cases with min. of 6 internal 3.5" drive bays.

Some say that the lower fan is too close both to the PSU and the hard drive cage making cable routing very difficult.

How come you have 3 drives in the middle cage? Isn't it for 2 3.5" drives?

well, it will mainly be used for everything, but gaming :) I'll use it for web server, file server and running multiple virtual machines. Would you still recommend the 9600? (I might play a game or two, so I can pay little more for a better video card)

Just go with the Antec 900. The airflow over the HDs alone is reason to. The case has the best airflow of any fan cooled case I have ever seen.

Sure but a ATI Radeon 3450 is only $50.00 which all you need for HD playback and non- gaming.

I'll second that. I just moved everything from an old Raidmax $50 case that I'd bought for a P4 Northwood in 2004 to an Antec Nine Hundred from Newegg. It has enough room for a 3870x2 and I really liked the front removable drive bays! Currently, because of the size of the card, all three sata drives are in the lower bay, but I could accomodate two more in the upper without any issues.

The Nine Hundred is the best case I've ever owned. The only quirk is the Antec Neo 650 at the bottom and having to snake the power cables over the graphics card. It's silent and cool, even when gaming. If he doesn't game, he might not like the blue lights on the fans, or the side window, but it's a great gaming case.

My system:

X2 4600+ Windsor 65 watt
MSI K9AGM 690V
2 gigs Kingston DDR2 667
MSI overclocked (850/1300) 3870x2
100 gig Maxtor sata for Vista
100 gig WD sata
100 gig WD ide with sata adapter
Memorex DVD R/RW
Antec Neo 650 psu
Antec Nine Hundred case
17" Viewsonic A71f

Yes, I know, I need a faster CPU and a new LCD monitor. Right now, I'm cpu limited in some games. More upgrades soon.

NZXT Zero is nice and roomy. Tons of fans which running at full speed are pretty quiet.

I think the antec 900 is fine.... If the only place you can buy pc parts is best buy.... :-P

Its not bad, but its no armor case :)

My first thread was more about PSUs and RAID controllers. Thus, I've started this 2nd one which will only be about cases. Sorry about the confusion...

I really would like to thank to all of you guys! All these replies are helping me a lot...

Right now, I'm leaning towards Thermaltake Armor. I'll replace the fans though if they have lights on them :)

Before I make my final decision, any last minute suggestions, comments?

Like you, I'm not a gamer, I built this machine as a home media server.

I eventually had to go to more than 9 drives, so the Thermaltake case became too small. I ended up purchasing a dedicated server case, the Chenbro RM414. 4U rack mount, holds 16 hot-swappable drives.

It was the right choice for doing a massive array, but it's significantly louder than the Thermaltake.

Look at the Antec P190. It's expensive, but it includes two Antec psu's which are good quality. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811129028

They don't look like they were made in a plastics factory...

Don't look at P190...

But do read some of the negative reviews about it!! Which question why it has 2x underpowered (Tier 3) powersupplies in it!! One which will be running at very low efficiency just to power your fans... Hmmm I don't think so...

this is the case to get: http://www.guru3d.com/article/cases/500/

this takes pimpin to a whole new level! if you water cool, you can mount the radiator "inside" the case on the ceiling as you will see there is 3-120 fan slots up there and fittings for the radiator!

now the only prob is to find it for sell!

I second this suggestion, outstanding case and you get what you pay for. I would also suggest this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811119039 with the addition of a second 4-in-3 HDD module to allow for up to 8 hard drives http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817993002

I really think all these door cases are a pain in the ass. If you are like me (!!) then go for a:
PCA70B case

and save yourself $30.00 for a door...

Agreed. I got a door case a few years ago. The door ALWAYS got in the way, and was held closed with a cheap plastic clip that broke after a few months. I eventually wound up taking a pliers to the cheap plastic door's hinges and yanking the whole thing off. But I still like a blinged-up case with lots of cheesy lights and windows. When I build my new system I'm leaning towards a blue Apevia X-Dreamer II (http://www.apevia.com/product.php?pid=87&xcSID=c6cf9d0bce191fd6b3ebc51fa3dd6679).

This is it, plus it looks better then anything else and that is important. You can get it without the PSU's and all the reviews i have read are good. Maximim PC gave it a 8 and they are super hard on towers. Plus ugly towers drive me crazy, is it only mac people that have any style.
