Don't buy it. I was going to buy two, however, after doing some talking with Sapphire I found out that the Atomic 3870 is a "limited" run and only 300 have been made (50 for sale in U.S). And only 300 will ever be made. They are getting ready for the 3870X2. The Atomic is not worth the price and I suggest you move onto the 3870X2 (as I have).

Oh, and Sapphire has given exclusive rights to NewEgg to sell the Atomic 3870. Thus, only NewEgg will sell the stock in the U.S.

Well if they are limited edition that might be even more incentive for some people to pick one up if they can find one.

What you mean by 3870X2? A single card with 2 GPUs built in or something like that? I'm gona do some research.

Apparently you're a bit behind on the info. It's real big news and there's quite a few threads here on it.

Ya since I built a system a month ago my research has shifted from the new stuff coming out to more OCing and games.

I'm ordering the Gigabyte GV-RX387512H next Friday at Newegg, but I am so tempted to wait for the 3870X2. Too much else to buy so I probably couldn't afford it. I figure any 3870, even one with DDR3 will hold me over till R700, or R770, or whatever will be coming out spring 2009.

I hate limited issue cards like that Atomic. They should say on Newegg that only 300 were made and it won't come back into stock.

Then again, the 2900 Pro was supposed to be temporary too, but Sapphire's still selling them at Newegg:

So, perhaps the Atomic will make a comeback after the 3870X2? It's to Sapphire's advantage to fill that price performance niche between a regular 3870 DDR4 and an X2 version.

One thing I've learned, there will always be a faster graphics card just around the corner and if you wait too long you miss out on the benefits of what's available at your price point now.

Is all that really true?

I was on the fence about this one but I might have to pick one up now just for the sake of having a neat card no one else does. And who knows, maybe that vapor cooler will fit on an 8800GT or future card... :D

Wild, that is not a good reason to buy the card. You would be paying too much for it. Pay the extra $100 or so and get a 3870x2.

And yes, from what I can tell it is true. I talked to both Sapphire and their distributor and both said the same thing. Only "limited" product with 300 being made.

Waiting for the 3870X2 will just be as bad as it is trying to buy an atomic. Over priced vendors will jack up the price sky high knowing we been waiting for them.

Oh well off to buy 2 regular 3870's I guess.
