More Information

I have a GA-MA790FX-DS5 motherboard and just bought the Phenom 9850 Black edition with unlocked multiplier..

Im trying to overclock it to 3.0ghz at least by just changing the multiplier but even at 2.6 ghz the computer crashes with a blue screen of death with something about one of the cores wasnt responding!

Is that bad?..something wrong with the CPU?

Now if there isnt anything wrong with the CPU then how the heck do I overclock it with my current motherboard?

Full Specs:
Phenom 9850
Motherboard above..(F5 Bios Update)
Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066ram(4x1gig sticks)
Single HIS HD3850 Stock OCed 512meg
Dual 70gig Raptors in raid 0 config
1 seagate 160 gig SATA3.0gb/s
1 Western Digital 350gig SATA3.0GB/s
1 External 500gig SATA 1.5GB/s
onboard sound
850watt Antec Quatro modular power supply(voltages check out)

I don't know about the B3s (9x50) but I know the B2s(9x00) where terrible overclockers and have heard similar rumbling about the B3s.

tried upping the voltage? but you might have a bad chip (although "bad" and phenom.... one in the same thing?)

You cant really go 3 GHz without water-cooling.
Maybe you should have an eye on that.

People have gotten it to go as far as 3.2stable...but not with my type of motherboard and they arent giving any directions on how they did it either..

And right now it runs COOLER than my old Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz ..and alot faster at stock speed...but wanted to try the OCing part...I dont think my motherboard can handle this CPU OCing..

3Ghz is difficult to do. It's like a barrier, many Phenoms won't be able to go over it without a lot of voltage.

Well...I solved one problem I think..its been running for abit now without the BSOD....but cant get it past 2.6GHZ..

I tried changing a few voltages but the CPU Voltage range is alot.. like .50 interval so didnt mess with those...

I was under the impression that this chip could OC without changing anything other than the multiplier.....changing voltages is something I tried before and it ended badly..lol...so this time im concerned with changing too many of them..

Well...im retarded..lol..I thought this CPU was supported by my motherboard since its brand new and such...but nope...supports ALL the new 125w cpus except this one....that blows..

Mine overclocked fine to 2912ghz with stock voltages using Asus M3A-32 delux MB. Full load temps running around 50-51c idle 42c

I have the 9850 and a Jetway HA04 extreme and I can not get it to boot into vista past 2.8ghz. It will over clock up to 2.9ghz some what stable once i get into vista at 2.5ghz -2.8ghz. I have just invested in a custom water cooling system so temps are not an issue with my system. It Idles at 29-32c and never hits over 40c even with it overclocked to 2.9ghz running benchmark 06. I have tried playing with the ht link, I have tried bumping the vcore to 1.4, turned down my ram to 800mhz from 1066mhz upped the volts to my OCZ hpc ram to 2.0, no luck at all. Just starting to think that this chip is not a great over clocker.

9850BE is OK for overclocking but hardly you could get past 3GHz.I think it is a top without losing stability.B3 can't go over about 3GHz so for overclocking is better slower CPU (9550,8650...).

I was able to get the 9850 to 3.0ghz (1.34v) stable on an MSI K9A2 Platinum with a ZeroTherm NV120 stable. The heat was tremendous, and gave me the final kick to invest in a water cooling kit. I decided to go with a Swiftecfh H20-220 Apex Ultra (w/ Apogee GT waterblock). This lowered the temps as expected, but didn't allow for a higher over clock. I can get 3.1ghz @1.57v and even run a full hour of AOD stability test. After a while though it pops up with the (failed to received interrupt on secondary processor BSOD in Vista, while Slackware just locks up.) Raising the voltage doesn't make a bit of difference in this case. One thing I have noticed though, is that using Unganged memory mode while overclocking proves to be very unstable. Using Ganged remedies this situation though. At 3.2ghz the system will post, but Vista nor Slackware will even get through the boot process.

Well they updated my bios but the cpu still wont OC higher than 2.6 without crashing on Vista startup..

The new BIOS is sort of ate up though..

says cpu vcore is 1.3000v but when I start windows and check it its at 1.2400v ..lol

bunch of other voltages are off also..from what they were before anyway..

What I want to know now is what are the default voltages for a GA-MA790FX-DS5 motherboard and what can I change it to to make my system stop blue screen of death crashing and giving me a secondary processor error...I dont think anything is wrong with my CPU I just think its not getting enough juice.. but an 850watt power supply should be plenty and my diagnostic says its working properly..

Right now i have
vcore at 1.290v
12v is at 12.040
memory at 3.310v
CPU vid 1.25v
Motherboard temp 105F
CPU temp 98F
According to Easy tune 5 pro

ill try it like this and mybe ill stop crashing..

nope still crashed...incresed vcore to 1.320v ...cpu temp went up to 104f but it seems stable so far..

Hi Bes, is your memory really at 3.31v!?!?
I'm having pretty similiar problems to you, I have same mobo and cpu. I've been able to reach 2.8 (@1.4v) and boot into XP Pro, but it's extremely unstable, so I'm staying at stock for now. I found easytune pro and amd overdrive to be pretty unstable for ocing and just have been using the BIOS. I have 2 sticks of 1gb 1066, seems to work a bit better when I tune it down to 800mhz.
Interesting about what viiron said about using ganged memory instead, I've heard just the opposite before lol! In fact I've heard tons of contradictory things about the phenom!
Here's a guide that may help you, good luck and let me know how it goes!

Thanks for the guide scurvywombat, I've been seriously considering the 9850 BE and all the horrific stories of trying to get to (and stay at) the Magical 3GHZ made me consider an INTEL (I've been using AMD's since September 1998).

So me getting an Intel would make me feel like I'm divorcing my wife AMD :pfff: (though my real wife doesn't understand the "fanboy" thing). You've possibly saved my marriage with AMD, Dr. scurvywombat :D after all these years I only know how to touch AMD in all the right places. Just the though of another processors speed and stability at 3GHZ makes me feel so guilty :ouch:

Anyway, DR. scurvywombat you should have your own show.
