More Information

Hey guys,

Over the summer I'm planning on building a bit of a server out of the parts form an old machine I have. Basically all i want this server to do is have a lot of hard drives in it for storage.

The spec for my old machine:
-AMD 3000+ s754
-A silly Asus (i think) mobo. I remeber trying endlessly a while ago to try and find what motherboard it is all i remeber si some sord of codename "Diablo". I think is microATX. It only has 2 RAM slots and no SATA.
-1 GB DDR 400 RAM
-160GB IDE Hard Drive
-Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
-Radeon X1600Pro (AGP) though i will probably put my old Radeon 9200SE back in for Power and heat reasons

Anyway what i plan to do is put ubuntu on the 160GB IDE drive then get a PCI (not express) SATA controller to allow me to connect 4  1TB Hard drives. The run Samba to share the contents with my windows boxes. I tried Samba on a virtual ubuntu machine and it seemed to work well.

If anyone could advise me on a controller card that could work with ubuntu it would be great. I'm not really interrested in RAID I would like just to see each 1 TB drive individually.

I would also appreciate some reccomendations on cases that are quite cheap, easy to fire stuff into and hold at least 5 hard drives.

Last question  :sarcastic: is it pssible to set samba up to allow sharing of full hard drives?

Any help is much appreciated,
Thanks,
Matt
