This thing is driving me crazy...

I just built a new computer, have a ga-p35-ds3l mobo, and i didnt get a sound card cause my mobo has a simple one and thats all i really need... well somethings not right, i pluged in my monitor to the outlet on my mobo and no sound, media player doesnt work either... i installed all the drivers, they are realtek audio 5 but i have no volume, not even a volume control in the taskbar.... and when i open the sounds tab in the control menu, the HUD comes up but everything is grayed out like it doesnt even recognize the mobo sound card? what do i do....

Register or log in to remove.

It's your monitor. use a pair of headphones/speakers & try them out. Works for me out of the box with $10 speakers. When the green (middle) audio out is hooked up right, the Realtek props won't bother you. Otherwise, it'll pop up telling you there's no audio connection.

Look in the device manager to see if your system has problems with the onboard sound. Chances are, you may need to uninstall it and reinstall it. I use realtek as well, and it works good enough for me.

If it's in "Device Manager" its already enabled in BIOS.

That's not what Device Manager would say. I would say "Realtek High Definition Audio" with an exclamation mark on it if it wasn't working.

yea that says its working but the taskbar icon says no active mixers detected...

You're using Windows XP, right? You need more than the audio driver, you need the HD audio update for Windows XP if that's the case.

Download the appropriate drivers from here. http://www.realtek.com.tw/download [...] o%20Codecs

From what I can tell you have a monitor with built-in speakers? If so, is there not a separate 1/8" inch plug to plug cord for this? If so I would hook it to the green plug on the MB first. If that does not work, or sounds fuzzy, try the black or gray plugs.

Last I checked the Windows XP HD audio update wasn't part of the Realtek drivers, but it can be found on the motherboard CD.

My link goes directly to the HD audio drivers. The XP drivers, the ones that say XP in green, are the second and third one down. One is a zip file, one is a .exe.

For anyone interested, the Linux drivers also work well.

I'm not talking about Realtek's "drivers", I'm speaking of MS hotfix KB888111 which is needed to support them. It's on the motherboard CD, and last I checked, it wasn't included in Realtek's driver pack.

In the bios, you should look for intergraded peripherals, that would normally have all onboard devices to enable or disable (firewire, network/Lan, Sound, and perhaps video). Not all MB brands would have the exact same thing, but look in your manual if your totally not sure. It should be easy to find.

Not sure if your looking at the device manager, located:

Start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management - select device manager.

From there you should see anything that is having a problem.

Once you got it working, XP should say it found a new device if it hasn't been enabled. From that point it's prolly best to uninstall the drivers again, and reinstall, but click on cancel when windows tries to install it.

really appreciate it guys, but i just reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled xp, and that did it... i think the problem was that i didnt FULLY update windows xp before installing the UAA bus and realtek... i read through the manual in detail over and over again, and it said nothing about this but i tried it and it worked... if they would stop printing 5000000 different languages and actually put useful info in the manual it might help...

kudos for help :D

so i have the same problem...
i should reformat the computer and install xp again then
1)update windows to service pack 2
2)install the MS hotfix KB888111 from the motherboard CD
3)install the real tek hd audio drivers from the realtek website
is that how it should go?

i had this problem today... and i seemed to stumble onto a fix for myself after about 6 hours of working on it. fisrt of all i would like to say, i could never get windows to actually reconice the sound card, as in finding new hardware. so after installing.. uninstalling rebooting at least 30 times... i uninstalled the ms update and the sound drivers restarted my comp in safe mode (w/ command prompt) and windows tried to install the drivers itself that time. so i cancled that and rebooted normally and isntalled the drivers from the disk... now i have sound.
maybe this can help you... good luck
