OK here is the problem:
I had an HP Pavilion 1642x and wanted to upgrade. So I first started by getting a new case. I switched out all of my hardware and had ALMOST no issues. All of my USB ports work fine. So I plugged in my USB wireless adapter and was not working. It was saying it was an unknown device.

Then I figured it was malfunctioning so I plugged strait into the Cable modem and it was finding an "Unidentified Network" and was not connecting to the internet still. I did modem restarts and had no luck. I am on another computer now connected to that modem. So I know there is no issue with that.

I reset IP and and did a couple other resets in dos that I was instructed to do from someone much more computer Savvy than I. I went out and bought a network card, and had the same issue as the one on the motherboard.


Thanks for any help, I hope I can get this resolved. I really dont want it to be my motherboard, and have to spend 100 bucks on that plus buying Vista...

Power cycle the modem and then open a Command Prompt and post the output from ipconfig/all.

Your network adapter is not being assigned an IP Address by the cable modem. Are you sure you power cycled the modem before connecting it to this computer? Cable modems remember the MAC address of the first connection they make.

The cable modem most likely needs to be reset by your ISP. Most cable companies put a MAC address lock on their modems so that they cannot be used with routers. If you changed the network adapter from the one you first used with the modem, the MAC lock needs to be reset. Power cycling the modem would not accomplish this.

Sometimes there is a timeout on the MAC address registered for cable service. The fastest way to get things going will be to call the ISP but if that is something you dread just disconnect the modem, leave it off overnight, and give it a shot the next day.

Ok i will try unplugging the modem tonight and see how it goes in the morning

ok I am still getting the same problem, even after unplugged the modem all night. Also I reinstalled the driver software from Lynksis and still cannot get my computer to recognize it

Its time give your ISP a call then. Just tell them you are putting your modem on a different computer.
