Hi guys,

yesterday i bought a new Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 320 GB. i connected it to my MSI K9N-Neo f mainboard but as soon as i boot my computer it starts making a strange noise. At this link http://www.hardware.info/forum/att [...] 1196953584 i've uploaded a zip with a wav-record of this noise. My harddisk is also not recognized, by the bios, as long as i hear the noise. But after a few minutes the noise stops and the disk is recognized by the bios. However, no information about the disk is displayed, just [] instead of 'not connected'. Not surprisingly, when I try to install vista the disk is also not recognized. Is this harddisk broken or do i have to change a bios setting?
plz help me, this is driving me crazy :pt1cable:

RMA the thing.

As a general rule - anytime a HD starts making odd noises, beep, click, etc.. its time to backup your data and replace it.

OK you bought the drive.
Did you remove the old drive or add this?
If you just swapped out the drive the system may be confused and is trying to use the old parameters to communicate.
You can install both drives the new one as a second and see if the bios picks it up and/or the you get the same problem.
Can you get into setup with no drive? if so save settings then power off and install and power up with the new drive.

check ur SATA power connector? check out the link for pinout (sata)

is ur power connector lacking of pin 1~3 of the connector ? is yes, probably its has insufficient power or current to power up the SATA hard disk hence causing it to have intermittent supply of power. :bounce:

Ive got the same problem with one of my 2.5 disks from a portable drive.
This happens if you get a crack or just a scar on the disks inside the harddrive.
I got mine from moving the disk a bit when it was still on...
Your disk might have got it from rocking it to hard while trying to get it in to your pc or while it was ported.
Sorry but all you can do is to go back or e-mail the retailer and tell them that it doesnt work/is broken and they have to give you a new one unless you've dropped it or something.. Don't have to tell them if you did ;)

I just received a Hitachi X500 portable USB HD (500 GB/2.5" ) from NewEgg, not 1 hour out of the package. It also beeps repeatedly when connected to USB port on my desktop, but works fine/is accessible on the MacBook. It may be the result of insufficient current capability on the particular USB port. My desktop has a pretty old MB, Asus, circa 2005 and probably does not have enough capacity to "turn over" the disk.

I'm a little confused here. Do the hard drives beep, or does the motherboard beep during POST? I've never seen a hard drive with a speaker.

Not just picking nits; if the beeping is the mobo it may be a different issue.

Good point, I did not get down next to the HD to find out which it was for sure (desktop is in fact under the desk). Check it out later today and bounce back results. Thanks.

Wyoming Knot - you were right. Its the mobo beeping not the hard drive. And it appears to be a compatibility problem with XP/older operating systems. The Hitachi X drive works fine on newer Windows laptop and MacBook pro. Just clicks on XP desktop, and computer beeps. Adding a powered USB hub does not help so it is NOT related to sufficient power to the hard drive. A tech brief on the Hitachi website

may hold the key. Apparently older systems, including XP, are based upon 512 byte sector size. The Hitachi uses 4096 bytes and the two are not compatible. Newer operating systems (Windows 7 and Leopard in the other two machines that tested fine) automatically handle the difference - XP does not. Hitachi offers an alignment tool (download) to overcome this mismatch. Install at your own risk I guess. I will use an older drive or flash drives to move files between the XP system and other computers, which has worked fine previously. Just what I should have expected for upgrading to a newer technology without looking before I leapt.

That's an interesting observation. I had been remarking for some time that all the challenge has gone out of building systems; everything is compatible with everything else. Looks like the skill is coming back into the craft, at least for a while.

a beep sound is coming from my hard disk , some time there is chain of continous beep and computer has become very slow . what should i do

It seems ur harddisk to pc connecting wire problem.. The same occured to me and when adjusting the port in the external hard disk resolved mine.. Try that.. check out new cable too.
