Hello everyone,

I have a very strange problem with my download speeds...

Due to living in a village, we have always been limited to a 500kb line. This means 60kb downloads, which when on a good server we always achieve.

Now, my brother asked for some help downloading some files. The file was 17.4 mb and it downloaded in about 50 seconds. This shocked me as I was expecting a 20 minute wait. I tried another website and again, he downloaded super quick at 230kb a second.

I used various speed checking websites and they all confirmed his speed.

My computer achieved: 493 kbps (61.6 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 201 kbps (25.1 KB/sec )
While his laptop achieved: 2639 kbps (329.9 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 267 kbps (33.4 KB/sec )

If someone could explain this and possibly provide me with a fix then that would be great. I am on Tiscali Broadband using an Ethernet Cable connected to a Netgear Router and my brother is connected via inbuilt Wireless.

just to make sure i have this straight? Are you both in the same home? using the same internet connections?

Wired connections are usually faster than a Wireless connection. Depends on if he's on a B or G or N. depends on his distance from the router. the signal strength.

put him on a wired connection and see if he achieves your same download speeds

If he is getting that with a wireless connection and you are getting yours with a wired connection i see only a couple things it could be.

1. If you dont manage your router, there may be settings on it limiting bandwidth is some ways.
2. The wireless he is using is a completely different connection that what your wired connection is.
