More Information

Hi all. I have a Compaq Presario R4000 lappy bought a couple of summers back from (whisper it) PC World. Everything's been fine and dandy thus far, till last month my DVD drive stopped working properly. When we went to watch a DVD the picture came through broken and shuddering and the audio only came through in static-flavour bursts.

I have a suspicion this happened after my most recent dissemble/clean/reassemble tough I can't be sure precisely. As a result I'm wondering if the actual drive is to blame or the connection on the motherboard. My PC World cover plan is no longer active so I can't get a fix0r from them, and I was wondering if anyone could advise me whether it's worth buying a replacement drive or trying to find out if the motherboard port is at fault first.

It's a HL-DT-ST GCA-4080N with default OEM firmware. I'm running XP SP2.

Many thanks

Tom
