More Information

Hi,
I'm building a computer for someone and unfortunately, they don't live in a broadband area. So, they bought an Etec 56k V.92 PCI Modem for me to install.

Trouble is, Windows XP doesn't seem to be detecting it. I stick the card in, boot up, I wait for a little bubble to pop up telling me I've got new hardware but that just doesn't happen. I look in device manager and see absolutely nothing.

The spec on the computer is:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz
Corsair Memory TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2x1GB
Asustek P5KC AiLifestyle Series P35
BFG Graphics GeForce 8800GTS 512MB
Windows XP Home

Any idea what the problem might be?

Thanks

Does the modem show up during POST?
Check your BIOS to make sure the PCI slots are available, some BIOS's give you an option to power down unused PCI slots. They should automatically detect if you insert a card, but worth a look anyway.
Can you try the modem in another machine to be sure it works?

Also this may seam dumb or even too obvious to do but give the "detect new hardware" button in device manager a shot. Sometimes hardware isn't exactly "plug and play" (plug and pray).

I have seen this on another board(non asus tho, never did see it with my asus boards). Try to reset the bios. This can force it to re-detect everything. Worth a shot.
