I have a Maxtor USB External Hard Drive that after a move, no longer seems to be working. Tried a different power cord, and opened it up and tried using the hard drive as a normal hard drive with the correct jumper settings, but nothing seems to work. In fact, when I hooked the drive directly to the computer, the computer would not boot up at all. Does anyone know what may have caused this and if there is still hope of making it work, or to just write it off as a loss at this point?

well, by eliminating usb as a possible problem, youve pretty much just narrowed it down to being a problem with the hdd, whichcase there usually isnt much you can do at this point, short of replacing it (could also try changing bios settings, trying different molex power connectors, different pata data cables, ide channels, master/slave etc, it seems unlikely that any of that would work though, but it wouldnt hurt to try)... it may not be a complete loss though, if the hdd is still under warranty, assuming none of the above works. not sure if removing the hdd from the usb case voided it or not... but rmaing the hdd to seagate may still be an option possibly.

Recently ran into this problem installing a hdd in a computer and it was the data cable as well as try skydaemon suggestions. You could also run the diagnostic/repair repair software from Maxtor off a floppy to see if it comes up with anything
