Hi all. I'm trying to network 2 of my computers together to transfer files. My Laptop has windows XP pro, desktop has vista x64. My desktop has 2 lan connections in the motherboard.

I've tried connecting both to my router, and i'm currently trying a direct hook up with a crossover cable.

The problem is, neither PC sees the other. But both will ping each other fine.

Both computers have at least a folder or 2 that's set to be shared. My laptop has that special XP fix that's supposed to allow xp to see vista computers.

Firewall is shut off on both computers. Their both on the same "WORKGROUP". Both set to private. Network discovery/file sharing set to "on". I've set both to static IP's within the same range. (192.168.0.x). I just don't know what else to try. Neither PC see's the other. Seems like i've tried everything but i may have missed something. If you need to know something, let me know.

Any help appreciated thanks.

open network neighborhood, or any other window. In the address bar type \\COMPUTERNAME this should hit it if all works. Otherwise if the computers are connected via crossover cable, set both systems to auto detect ip settings, boot one into windows, then the other so they are configured automatically to each other. Windows has a built in function to do that if it doesnt find a DHCP server.

Ok, doing this, the PC's can now recognize each other. But neither will let me get into the other's files. Each says access is denied.

Keep in mind that both computers have the same account name and password.

hello icewolf69:
I think you may need to install the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder component on your XP pc if you haven't already. Here is a Microsoft link to read about problems with Vista/XP networking:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120

Hope this solves your problem.......it did mine.

EDIT: I missed your comment that your XP pc "XP fix installed".....sorry!

Have you set your network up on Vista in the Network & Sharing window to allow other computers to share files? If so, are the Vista files you are sharing in the Public file? The XP files can be shared by just setting them up as shared but in Vista don't you have to put the files in the Public file for sharing?

Well I'm not too concerned with getting files off the vista PC, i really just wanna pull 60gb off the laptop which is the one with XP.

I've gone into the folder to try to add my PC's user to the permissions list but it says it wasn't found.

All the files i want off the xp PC are in the "sharedDocs" folder. and i can access every folder and file in the "sharedDocs" from Vista, EXCEPT the folder that has all the stuff in it i want.

For example, i can get to "SharedDocs\Adobe PDF" and "SharedDocs\My Music" (which has no files) but i can't get to "SharedDocs\shared" which is the only folder i need to get to

If the 60 GBs is in one file on the XP pc and you right clicked it and checked "Share this folder on the network" and "Allow network users to change my files" it should show up on Vista if you have the Network Sharing set up right. Did you run the XP pc's "set up a home network with the Vista PC turned on and with the cable connected?

Hmmm.....might be a good idea to open Vista's Network & Sharing Center and click on the little question mark in the upper right corner and see if you have followed all the necessary steps for your network and file sharing. Lots of good info in that help window!

Yeah, i've set up the home network.

I've tried having the folder set to share, and not set to share. I couldn't acess it either way.

I mean, the other folders in the shared documents aren't set to share and i can access them

Do i need UAC enabled in vista to do this stuff?

edit-apparently it doesn't matter.

This is absolutely ridicules. I'll just transfer the 60 GB's via thumb drive
