Anyone here experienced with DD-WRT or Tomada and know if they support packet prioritizing? I'm aware of bandwidth throttling/limiting but what I want is packet prioritizing.

dd-wrt supports a few different types of QoS services. Check out their wiki for more information. not sure on tomada but i'm sure it would too.

I didn't find any mention of packet prioritizing in there at all, but found quite a lot on throttling or giving a certain game/ip/program more bandwidth while taking away from lower priorities. I forgot to mention that I'm a gamer so just limiting bandwidth won't be as efficient for me as prioritizing packets.

actually it is prioritizing. you can do it by application port, which would be best for a specific application, or by mac/ip address if you just want one computer to have priority. The only time QoS is even required though is when you are maxing out your connection because if you arent then there are no delays on the packets anyways.

If that's true then my games shouldn't be choked when other nodes are watching Youtube. Youtube doesn't max out my connecting, or at least I don't think so. The choking from a maxed out connecting(e.g torrenting) has a completely different feeling.

When it's maxed out my ping in game shoots up to like 1k or to the point where it won't even display and accompanied with a "flush entity packet" error. The game won't be able to register and outputs on my screen are delayed about 10 seconds. Now if they were just watching youtube, my ping would just fluctuate from 10-50, causing frequent player studdering, delay would be very short but tangible. Both are undesired and effect my game play.

if that is the case you are maxing out your connection, most likely for very small periods of time. basically at some point in time more packets are queued up to be sent down your internet connection that the speed you have can handle, even if its only for a second or two. the difference obviously is that a program like bittorrent will constantly max your connection.

follow the guide on dd-wrt, set up your bandwidth limits in your router correctly, and, for example, set device priority by mac or ip address to your computer. then when the router gets too many packets at any point in time and has to queue them up, it will send yours first. not too difficult, but keep fighting me, by all means. i have no idea about anything.
