My name is Brian, and I work for a Computer repair shop and we are researching a new program for firmware based anti viruses. I am looking for an updatable Anti-Virus program that works pre boot within the BIOS or a Bootable CD. What is the best available that you guys know of\would recommend.

Any anti-virus will scan the boot sector before Windows loads.

Yes, I know that, but ther eare some antiviruses, that will not run because of Rogues, or trojans locking everything down, even in safemode...
Is there a bootable disc antivirus that allows someone todo scans within an OS built onto a disc.

avira free will do it if you set it up for fastest boot when you do the setup!

No, its just we cannot run our utilities because the rogues are built to block every install and .exe file

do you have access to another computer?
if you do,download this antivirus software and install it on a thumb drive ,update it then unplug it and plug it in to the infected ciomputer,and run the scan!

After scanning, also use http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

there is a trick that i picked up in dealing with rogues. if you go into safe mode and go into the msconfig startup options alot of times you will find entries for the rogue software and you can just turn it off (sometimes.) or if you can play a little where's waldo you can look in the main user acct. in the app data folder, program data or the program files folders and just delete any entries you know don't belong. If any of this has been successful then you should be able to run anything you want (.exe or otherwise) in regular windows to finish the repair.

write a " hirens boot cd "to an empty disk.
It has many antivirus scanners you can use to check your system

With a business...would not touch hirens boot cd. Might be a great tool, but it's said a lot of the programs included are paid programs. If you download them with that cd for free.....Seems like a liability if you get audited.

Check out ultimate boot cd for windows. It allows you to use an XP cd to build a bootable cd that will boot you into a mini windows xp environment. Should at least allow you to do some file copying and all that. Also check into a nice set of adapters, which should allow you to hook any drive to your pc, then you can scan from there as well.

This thread is old, but since I posted, I've discovered I very much like Avast Antivirus. Used to be a big fan of AVG, and it's still good, but Avast actually puts the option in there for a preboot scan, which is very nice indeed. Might be something to check out.

I do like the feature in Avast that lets you do a boot-scan before Windows loads.
I have used the Avast before and would have went with Avast again,
but after trying this Comodo Internet Security with it's networking features leaves me feeling secure about my rig.
