Hi, I would like to change the default localhost ip (127.0.0.1) on my Vista Home Premium PC. I tried to modify the "hosts" file located in c:\windows\systems32\drivers\etc but it didnt work. Any idea ?

um... LOL. Honestly, when I saw the thread title I thought 'the host file! it's so easy to fix it too! this is gonna be an EASY reply. Then, your post says the host file doesn't fix it. Honestly, I can't think of how else you'd change the localhost. Just for curiosity, why would you want to change the localhost? Why not just specify a new IP in the host file? Like do a localhost2 and set it to whatever you want?

do this and it will let you change/save your hosts file.

1) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4) Click File -> Open
5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
7) Select "hosts" and click "Open"
8) Make the needed changes and close Notepad. Save when prompted.

Tried but didn't work :(

I'd like to redirect localhost to 10.0.0.1 - so I can test a site on my mac's localhost.

Any ideas?

You can't really do what you're asking that's your loopback adapter and it's not optional.... and if you could change it would break... well... most everything. There are more reasons for this than I can or care to list.

So what exactly are you trying to accomplish here? If you can detail what your problem is / why you're trying to redirect to your loopback to your mac on 10.0.0.1 perhaps we can come up with a solution that will work.

what Brian_TII said. It's a standard that's been around since the 80s and is non-optional as it's built right into the TCP/IP stack.

um, so you are hosting a site on your MAC, what ever software you are using have it listen on you own IP, then open your browser up and type your own ip....

i did this just for soe purpose like a month before and now i wanted to come back to my default host file..i tried my best but could come up with default host file.i think i have only one option to install window again but i am pretty sure there should be a way to make host file default..
