32 bit or 64 bit?

Forum Windows XP : General Discussion 32 bit or 64 bit?

I'm thinking about building my next computer, and It's likely I go for 4 GB of RAM. I know I'm going to lose about 0.5 GB if I use a 32-bit version of Windows, but I don't bother if this way I avoid some headaches looking for drivers, and it seems that 64-bit versions are less mature.

What's your experience (with either XP-64 or Vista-64)?

Haven't had a reason to use 64-bit yet. Like you said until the drivers mature and more software/games take advantage of 64 bit processing the only reason to go 64 bit is the 4gb limit.

Its a simple choice if your going Vista

If you have less than 3GB of ram then go 32bit
If you have more than 4GB of ram then you must go 64bit

Between 3GB and 4GB its better to go 64bit but you dont loose much.

And as for the difference....

I find 64bit Vista to be more stable, faster and easier to work with than the 32bit version. I have not yet found any driver problems as everything I have has a 64bit signed driver for it and all the tools and applications have 64bit signed drivers (I use RivaTuner for GPU overclock and CoreTemp for CPU temp monitoring and they both have signed drivers now).

If you want XP then stick with 32bit. 64bit XP is immature and driver support is lacking compaired to Vista 64. This is mainly because MS never really released it to the general public and 4GB or more of ram was not that common during its life. Now 4GB is becoming the norm Vista 64 has alot more support (some drivers for Vista will work on XP64 however this does not include sound or graphics drivers)
