Hi all, I have recently done a 0.05 voltmod for my 7900GT and clocked it at 570mhz. I want to start low see the temps an then do a 0.1 on to of it.

The question is this, when in 3d mode I was getting a high pitch noise from the card with out the voltmod, but with the voltmod it is a little louder
Is is normal, do you think I should proceede with the 0.1 mod, cause I want to clock it above 600mhz? I don't get any artifacts and everything is stable.

BTW my load temps are about 65 c, I have a EVGA KO cooler that is used with the 7959GT KO superclocked.

Thanks. :D

Its coming from your power supply. I have had the same noise with 2 power supplies when my card goes into 3d mode, or in other words needs more power. Not sure why it does it, if it is a sign your psu is being stressed or what.

You need a voltmod to hit 570 Mhz??? I think you could take it higher.. I just now took my card to 570 to see if it could... with a little mem overclock on the side.... Maybe PSU.. If you are sure its the vid card, maybe its the fan squealing because of higher rpms caused by higher temps from the voltmod..

Be careful with the 7900gt, they have a habit of dying when OC. At least, the factory OC ones do. I get a hiss sound when I have the ATItool spinning box thing running. Not sure where its coming from, only noticed it 2 days ago. Havent tried ingame to see if I get it either. My psu is crap, so it could be that.

It is because The APC is getting wayy too stressed and working overtime that the high pitched noise is coming out of your psu, get a newer, bigger one. Ps, does anyone know a program that will change every "ign" to "ing" because i couldn't be stuffed fixing up my typing every time i write.

thanks, for your replies, but my PSU isn't the problem, I have 34 amps on the 12v line. The wine was a little less audible with out the mod, but with this mod it is somewhat more audible, and when I tried to set it to 1.3v the wine was very audible. It is most audible to my observation when I have my card in both 2d and 3d, like when I run a GPU stress test to check my load tems.

My card is the evga revised KO edision with a beefier heatsink, when I had it at 590mhz my load tems were 69-71 c.

Alrighty, Luckily EVGA has a lifetime warrenty, so all I'll have to do is wipe the mod good and send it off. What do you think are the chances of EVGA finding out about the mod? Do you think it will last till August, cause I might get an HD 2900XT proly 1gb version, or whatever Nvidia will offer.

Thanks for your replies.

sorry for the double post but I just did a small test. When fully in 3d like in oblivion I don't have that wine at all, but when I run 3d windowed along the 2d desktop I get that wine, so maybe my card ain't dying cause I almost never run games windowed. thanks.

Ok well maybe its the card maybe its not, but i have had a very similar high pitched noise that comes on when running my X1800XT on a Smartpower2.0. Yes, not a quality unit but certainly enough to power my card and at first i thought it was the X1800XT, i thought it might be typical since it drew more power than any previous cards i had.

I later found out after very close inspection it was the psu. I wouldn't be so quick as to say his card is dying, my money is still on the psu.

My card is the same as far as i know. In games I dont notice the buzzing/hissing but if I run ATITool with the 3D view on, it does make those noises.

Thats because ATiTool stresses your card the most. It could be a result that your card is drawing more power when using ATi Tool because of its demanding test.

No other card that I've had did it tho.

Do you have any other card that draws as much power as a 7900GT

OK I did an anouther small test and ran RTHDRIBL and I didn't get that wine. The only time I get that wine is when I run "Video Card Stability Test" app, other than that no wine. I did the 0.1 mod on top of my old one, and modded my card to 1.35 it is now clocked at 600mhz, it could do a little more but I don't want to push it.

It is wierd that only in this app I get that wine, to me it seems that Oblivion on ultra high settings at 1680x1050 it more demanding.

I think my card can switch between voltages, and when I run that app it the voltage regulators work overtime.

Thanks.

BTW my 3dMark05 score whent from 8800 to 10300. :D
