I would like to get my son a laptop for Xmas with good graphics. I am looking to spend around $600. What do you suggest. Thanks to all for your help.

most laptops come in either 1366x768 or 1920x1080 flavors. for $600 you are most likely going to be stuck with the lower resolution model if you want to keep the hardware top-end.

the asus model i purchased at microcenter was a good deal at around your budget.

i7, seperate video card (not integrated), decent ram... its the model with the ripple scratch resistant finish on the outside and the real aluminum deck inside around the keys.

You want at the very least an AMD 6620G. I recommend:

Get the extended warranty and still under $600. Very good performance for that price. If possible, OC the GPU to give yourself more performance. Your son should be happy. It can play Crysis and Battlefield. Hurry thou. Don't know how many left.

I am willing to go 700-800. I have heard that HP and Asus are the best. What do you think and which models.

The Y570 is highly recommended. I would recommend it if the original limit was $800. If you are increasing your spending to $800, then get it.

as far as the asus model in question from microcenter is concerned it had a "dedicated video card" not an "integrated video card" which means improved performance. i think i paid about $700 or so for it but do what you want.
