I know it's probably the most irritating part of our love for machines, but occasionally we all have questions regarding licenses and legalities. Of course we wouldn't want to use Tom's instead of a lawyer (well maybe we would) for court but we do need to know best practices and references always help. Any chance of getting a forum legal section?

Can't vote - the poll is closed but if I had it would have been a thumbs down.

I think it would be very hard to tell the qualified advice from what we call in England a barrack-room lawyer. Also, I'm afraid it wouldn't even be worthwhile if the Mods got together to appoint a Mod who is a qualified because what laws apply in one country, do not in another.

When discussing license laws, don't focus so much on the country. Focus more on the company's license regulations. For example, Microsoft has restrictions on their OS licenses. They are the same in the US as they are in the UK.

I don't want to vote against this if it's only for Licences, etc and not a shouting place for the usual suspects posting about class actions against HP and the like

That said, it's important to stress that there are global variations. The European Union, for example, forced M$ into a corner over the imposition of IE, resulting in the intrusive Browser Choice add-on.

Thank you, I'm not sure how I borked it.

This is exactly the sort of thing I was thinking.

There are also so many kinds of licenses, that have different rights and expectations on use.

It doesn't take much effort. There's some magic involved to make it work properly.

Kudos for a discussion about a legal forum and then using the term "borked". ;)

Ha, I didn't even catch that! It's amazing how that stuff lingers in the back of your brain...
