I was playing with 7Z 9.2 the other day when i saw that for some settings, it needed 40GB of RAM for compression and decompression.
what i want to know is does using these settings really makes a lot of difference?
there are multiple compression methods there :
LZMA
LZMA2 : uses doube the RAM and has support for >4 threads.
PPMOD: uses a LOT of RAM but is single threaded. better compression rates than the other two.
since we are talking about 40GB RAM sizes, i would like Toms to do an article on that.
Advantages: its free, scales to as many thread as needed.
would also serve as a benchmark for the new 6C/12T SB-E processors.
