How about compiling a "Tom's Hardware Recommended Buy" chart?

You could only list the most recent things, otherwise the list could get huge!

List things like the "list" in the articles link.

I know of the 1366 mobo, DDR3 RAM, BD-DVD drive...

You know what you recommend, let us know, in a chart.

That's what the System Builder's Marathon is all about each month. Three configurations for different budgets.

Yeah ... crashman did a good job with the comparison article too.

I hear what your saying foscooter ... but wait ... quite a bit is it is actually happening.

The graphics (Don) and Gaming CPU (Don) monthly articles cover those two major expense areas.

You would need a monthly roundup on HDD's / SSD's and RAM ... frankly I don't think it is worth it. These get reviewed every 3 - 6 months as it is.

Mobos don't get as many reviews ... unless there is a new chipset ... fair enough.

Looks like everything is pretty well covered I'd say.

If you need advice with a few choices for parts then throw up a thread on the homebuilt forum ... plenty of helpful experts there.

Ok, I understand this guys, but they don't always choose products that are "Recommended" in the SBM. One example is in the $3000 Extreme build they did in March 2010, they put in 2 Crucial SSD that they had never tested.

I understand the graphics, they do that every month, but they don't do brand names. I know this would be alot to compare, and they do say brands shouldn't matter.

I just want a list of the products they have tagged "Tom's Hardware Recommended Buy", the one they actually give a "badge to." Like this one:

http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab240/foscooter/x58-usb3-award.jpg

What I have seen lately:

LGA1366 x58 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (2010)

DDR3 Triple DRAM: Crucial Ballistix DDR3-1333 CAS 9 (although I don't remeber actually seeing a badge awarded for this) (2009 or 2010?)
DDR3 Dual DRAM: G.Skill’s Trident DDR3-2000 (05-25-2010)

Optical Drive: Lite-On iHES208 BD-ROM DVD±RW Combo Drive (2010)

CPU Coolers: Xigmatek HDT-S1283 (07-11-2008)

Just an idea.

Hmm.. I sorta see benefits in this. That way those who don't want to/don't have the time/social skills can check for components that have been tested and passed with flying colours.... I see what you mean in that sometimes untested components are used. If nothing else it adds an element of completeness to the review process.

It doesn't seem logical: $200 on a monitor and $200 on a graphics card. $0 on a sound card and $50 on speakers.

Such a list might get obsolete fairly quickly, and I would imagine it would be difficult to keep constantly up to date. It's a great suggestion though, perhaps something could be implemented in the way of direct user reviews in the future.

Well.. recommended buys don't get given out that often, so it shouldn't be that hard to do something like it I guess.

Probably because the reviewers here are a pretty tough lot with reps to guard and don't like to recommend something unless it is a reall bargain / winner.

The Celeron 300A, XP1700+, Northwood 2.4, Q6600, E5200, i7920 all come to mind for me ... as bargain overclockers ... along with a few mobos that would make more tedious reading.

That rabbit looks like it has a better life than I do ... heh heh.

Cheers.

Just a list of the components they have awarded the "Tom's Recommended Buy."

Is that so hard? See post #4.

Seeing as they're not given out very much, I wouldn't think it'd be too hard.

And did you notice that they just added a GFX card:

Nvidia GeForce GTX 460: Here's the badge awarded!

This is all I'm asking for, a list.

Ah, that's better. For some reason I wasn't allowed here for the past while...

Hmm.. where would the link go though?
(whole new tab or under articles etc)

The problem with the CPU and Graphics roundups is that they are squarely focussed on gaming we need overall best CPU, best graphics... With regard to other components I reckon its a good idea to have a buyer recommendation from Tom's even if you guys just add them when you do comparisons add the best option as a recommendation.

You can usually just use the forum to ask a question about specific parts and the people respond usually pretty fast with a good answer

Totally agree with foscooter! In fact, I am really surprised such a list doesn't exist already.

Our Best Configs section is coming along nicely and should offer some strong recommendations for hardware buys. Check it out under the Systems section and vote early next week on your fave configs.

Reply to jpishgar

Hmm.. that does sort of pretty much satisfy most of it I guess (love the idea btw :)), but even a thread dedicated to the recommended items would be handy. If you can get a trustworthy and active forum member to update every week or so if there's something new, then there wouldn't be much maintenance.
