The virtual denizens of Second Life will be getting a new way to communicate, namely voice chat. Starting next week, 1000 lucky people will be able to beta test voice chat technology. Linden Labs, the owners of Second Life, say this isn't just any voice chat because character animations will match speech volumes - talk louder and your character goes nuts. Characters can chat privately in addition to joining larger "chats" for concerts and public gatherings. Read more

If you just want to chat with your fruiends then you need to buy a webcam
from your local PC supplier, most come with basic video conferencing
software that allow you to chat with other people who have the same
software. You can also use this webcam in conjuction with Instant Messaging
software so you can point and click to start chats with your friends when
they come online.
If you are looking for business grade conferencing then i suggest you look
