I don’t know when I installed this but as it just stared recently I assume it
was with a w98 update, MS Antivirus or MS Validation key. Anyone know what it
is? TIA

It is Outlook Express...your email program.

Msimn.exe is the executable for OE. Perhaps OE is trying to connect on its own
or some 'program' is using OE to access the Internet.

That's Outlook Express. When you say "calling home", we see that as saying
that the program wants to dial up. Do you use OE? What is the problem you
want to solve? An unexpected prompt to dial up, or what?

Thank you for the replies. Buffalo, I think maybe you are correct in that it is
another program trying to use it. I am not sending or receiving email when I get
a notice that it is trying to reach a URL? numbered blah, blah (I'll have to
look closer next time). I just stop it. I'll try a good clean up and delete some
of the programs I've been testing and see what happens.

Yes, Gary I get an unexpected prompt that OE wants to connect to a URL or ISP.
Sorry but I'm not sure as I just stop it. I paid little attention until today,
which is about the 3rd day it occurred. It only happened once a day. I am using
w98se and OE. This has never happened in the last 5 years or so and it started a
couple of days ago. I'm connected to the Internet doing something else when this
prompt pops up.

Thanks PA Bear I just checked and the settings are as you show below. Your point
about OE running in the background could be correct as I sometimes check email
and/or newsgroups but I don't always close the program. I'll have to watch that.
But even if OE is running in the background it should not just try to dial out
unless a program initiated it? Could it be OE itself? I will keep a close eye on
it when it happens again and write down exactly who it is sending too.

If OE's configured to check for new mail on a schedule, it will need to
connect to do so, yes.

OE shares IE's connection settings. See OE Tools > Options > Connection: Is
"Hang up after..." selected here? Should it be? (Assuming AT&T DSL, no.)

Also check your settings for every mail account here: OE Tools > Accounts >
Mail > [mail account] > Properties > Connection. Is "Always connect to this
account..." checked? Should it be? (Assuming AT&T DSL, no.)

OE is open and options are not set to check for new mail at intervals. I am
running Kerio firewall, which is alerting me to the outgoing message. I keep IE
updated but I never updated OE specifically as I assumed that was part of the IE
update? Am I in error here? I realize that attachments are frowned upon here but
I have a 28 KB Word document which I can post showing the error box if
acceptable?

Well, you have to permit that one, or OE won't synchronize your NGs.
Uncheck it in Kerio to see.
