The following post is for historical purposes only. I went through an
adventure getting sound to work on my P6STP-FN. During the adventure, I
found some help from others in the way of undocumented jumper settings, etc.
I wasn't able to find a newsgroup post or web site explaining all of this
info, so I decided to post it here in case someone goes looking for it in
the future.


A few years ago, ECS sold the P6STP-FN, a socket 370 board. This board was
sold in (at least) two different variations: the normal one (still shown on
their website, but hidden, at http://www.ecsusa.com/products/p6stp_fn.html)
and the "header-less" one (not mentioned anywhere on their site, to my
knowledge).

The "header-less" one did not include things like the PS2 keyboard/mouse
connectors, printer connector, audio jacks, etc. It was usually sold with
an infra-red adapter and a cheap infrared keyboard.

Anyway, I was building a PVR, so I needed the sound to work. I pulled an
audio jack off an old mainboard I had lying around, then soldered it onto
this one. No audio under Linux. Thinking ALSA was playing games with my
head, I installed Win2K on a different hard drive to rule out Linux audio
problems. No dice.

I google'd the hell out of the problem, eventually coming to a similar
project at

on that page mentions that he's got the same board, but doesn't mention any
problems getting audio to work. Well, I e-mailed him and asked if he had
any problems, to which he responded with a few of the usual questions
(Drivers installed? Sound turned up?), but another question that solved my
problem: Did you jumper pins 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8 on J7?

What? That's not mentioned in the manual ... I jumpered the pins and sound
works fine under both Linux and Win2k. Now, if only I can get a decent
TV-out signal out of this board, I'll be happy.
